Not a bad primer for beginners to Ruby. The book has noticeable spelling/grammatics errors occasionally, and with a lack of history for the company that produces this book and others, this sets the book in a somewhat "needs polish" category. On first glance, the book looks to be published by a popular company, as the quality of the book aesthetics-wise is done very well; however, you can tell after a bit of page-flipping that it was probably edited and produced independently, solely by the author (props to him as the quality of his small production is surprisingly good). Many good pointers are brought up throughout each chapter, but as you progress more into the book, you notice how the vagueness on certain topics can lead to more confusion rather than simplifying the complexities of Ruby programming.Again, great for those who are completely new to Ruby programming as a primer, although I wouldn't say it's for the complete programming newbie; again, there's certain vagueness, even in the beginning, that may require additional research outside of this book to understand fully what the author is trying to convey. It really helped that I took programming courses in high school and college, so picking up on conveyed ideas and explanations wasn't too difficult. This book would go great alongside a more polished, refined, more in-depth Ruby instruction book; this one to be used to prime into the more complex book next. If this book were peer reviewed or collaborated by others in the profession and processed through a reputable publishing/editing company, it would have turned out far greater as a "one stop shop" for Ruby beginners; for now it should be looked at as supplemental education for Ruby beginners.

Most people on the court do not carry one of these. I am glad to have it.It appears to have all the info I was looking for, although I was originally looking for the USTA Friend of the Court 2017 edition. As far as I can determine, the full rulebook is only available to download/print from the USTA website and is 230 pages.Another reviewer mentioned that the book does not have an index - it does, however, have a table of contents which seems adequate for my purposes.

I'm a tennis team captain, and this USTA handbook is perfect for settling arguments that come up on the courts.

Not what I was expecting. This books just provides a very basic look at the game of tennis. Does not include a more comprehensive look at the actual rules of the game. For that one needs to obtain the "USTA Friends of Court" handbook.

This is a fabulous tennis bag resource for the inexperienced tennis play. It's a small, portable paperback that is packed with all the information you need to know. Effectively organized and referenced, many of the commonly asked questions, such as rules during a set and match tie breaker, are clearly written.

I have been having back and leg spasms for some time. I had an MRI and was told I had minor disk issues and just had to live with it. ,I did physical therapy and took ever and ever stronger meds. I had some relief but I still couldn't do much without being in pain. Even just walking.I finally ordered this book on a whim. I figured what could I lose.I skimmed thru the book until I got to the series of exercises. I started them that day and just like the author claimed, I had instant relief.I am a skeptic about claims of miracle cures and I still can't believe that something this simple works.I no longer take any medication and on days that I overdo gardening or heaving lifting I just do the exercises and the pain goes away.I have recommended this book to everyone that tells me they have back pain.

If your surgeon has recommended surgery (which of course is what they do) because of back pain, do yourself a favor and, read Dr. Marcus' book. Better yet, see him in person. If he can help you he will, and you'll save the time, money, and inconveniences that come with surgery. If he can not, he'll gladly recommend the correct Dr. who might be able to give you the relief needed, whether through surgery or other modes. Due to a near fatal MVA I became a patient of Dr. Marcus and his treatments have allowed me to continue working as a professional dance teacher and choreographer. When necessary I've had surgery (30 as of now) but without Dr. Marcus' techniques and exercises, which are clearly presented in his book, I wouldn't be functioning at the level needed to continue in my field.

These exercises seem simple - too simple at first. I wanted to charge ahead and get to the complicated one at first, but I followed the instructions and took it easy. By golly, after a week my back felt a little better. I took a long road trip for 5 weeks, hefted my luggage and routinely carried 40 pounds of camera great daily. I almost never felt bad.This is a book, not a magic potion. I've had back trouble since I was a teenager due to motorcycle and car wrecks, a bad parachute fall (it was the landing really that got me) and probably bad genes. So this book showed me ways to improve my condition, but it cannot cure a bad back. I do them almost every morning (I am not perfect) and almost never have pain. But sometimes my pain will come back when I move wrong. These exercises help with the acute pain, if I do them carefully.I finally bought a Herman Miller ergonomic chair for my long hours at the computer (I am an author) and it also helped tremendously. I think these exercises control 40% of my pain, the chair another 40%. The book cost a lot less. I thought I was "cured" and quit doing the exercises for a week. My old pain came back. Stick with the plan and you will be rewarded.I believe someone commented that he found the same exercises for free elsewhere. I doubt they were exactly the same. Maybe so, but I think that the way this book is laid out, the way it is written and the illustrations make it a bargain. The author deserves every penny.

This book was recommended by my orthopedic therapist. It is very helpful to review and do the exercises if the pain reoccurs and savinga lot of money for co pay on therapy and easing any pain.

I have had chronic pain since adolescence for no obvious reason, but have always tried being active in spite of it. Over time it has only gotten worse. I have been on what has become a years long journey to find answers as to why and heal. At this point, I feel like I have read every book, seen every kind of doctor under the sun, had every medical test run, tried every type of exercise, with no real solutions. I have only become more injured and pained and less able to do the things I love.I ran across this book by happenstance. I went to the the NYU medical website to get a phone number and saw a posting about a study Dr. Marcus had done in identifying the sources of chronic pain. I read the study and felt like he was really onto something. I immediately looked him up, saw this book and bought it. I am so, so, so glad I did. Dr. Marcus looks at, and tests for, injury and inadequacy in soft tissues (mainly muscles) as a source of pain. Not only has he created a way to distinguish weakness from injury, but also has ways of treating both. It makes SO MUCH SENSE.There is an exercise portion in the book that at first seemed a bit laughable to me. Many of the movements look very basic and I thought "yeah who couldn't do these? As if this is going to make any difference." But then I tried them. I was SO surprised to find weakness and deficits in my range of motion that I had never realized. In all my years of being in and out of physical therapy, pilates, yoga, etc. and developing a keen awareness of my body, how had I not found these specific things out? How on Earth can we expect to be fully functioning if we don't know what is dysfunctional first? Knowing these things and being able to work on them has been invaluable and allowed me to regain much movement I'd lost.There is a goldmine of information here. I think Dr. Marcus's way of approaching pain will eventually become standard practice in the medical community--it is just so obvious and yet so overlooked. But until then, if you have chronic pain issues I highly suggest getting this book and following the doctor's advice.

Terence Parr is a professor of computer science and graduate program director at the University of San Francisco, where he continues to work on his ANTLR parser generator (http://www.antlr.org) and template engine (http://www.stringtemplate.org). Terence has consulted for and held various technical positions at companies such as IBM, Lockheed Missiles and Space, NeXT, and Renault Automation. Terence holds a Ph.D. in computer engineering from Purdue University and was a postdoctoral fellow at the Army High-Performance Computing Research Center at the University of Minnesota, where he built parallelizing FORTRAN source-to-source translators. For any computer scientist, there comes a moment when you need to convert languages, refactor, make small but large scale changes, parse a bunch of log and to analytics. You can do that by using Perl, regular expression of coding in your language of choice. Or you can read this book and go it 100x faster!Working with embedded devices I never looked into how to implement a compiler, but I which I did! This book was an eye opener and timer saver, with concrete techniques on how to implement and work with trees, parsers, lexer, symbol table. This book is a must for all computer geeks. Go get Antlr4 book too https://amzn.com/1934356999!The combination will save you lots of time and give you the edge to reach top tier and make you a guru!

This is NOT a text for understanding a quick, rudimentary introduction to writing simple grammars, getting lexers and parsers for it in your programming language of choice as the introduction will have you believe. Having a hard background in computer science (granted, it is over a decade old), I still found this book a very heavy read. The online help and community for ANTLR is slow or non-existent. It would be tremendously useful if the author wrote a very simple book, without the theory, and directly to applications, and concentrated on implementations on languages like JavaScript. The problem is that this book may have some pretense of being a basic book, but is very far from being basic and befuddles the reader with too much information you likely will find in a graduate text in compiler technology.

Excellent book. As someone who has been curious about the inner workings of building languages and as one who builds interpreters every so often, this book really helped me learn better fundamentals to tackle this problem.Since studying this book, I have built custom interpreters mapping data stored in a custom human readable syntax into object instances at work. This has also allowed for working on an interpreter to map voice commands into executed actions on applications. While I certainly am no expert, this book really helped bring me out of the dark into being fairly proficient at building lexers and parsers and using them in real world applications.Note that I studied Aerospace Engineer formally and study computer science and software engineering outside of that since I love it, so you don't need to be some Computer Science or Software Engineer by education to get a lot of value out of this book.

I really liked this book. I have read the chapter on creating a byte code interpreter and assembler many, many times. I wrote my own assembler and byte code interpreter using this book. If you want to learn how to build your on compiler or interpreter, this book is a good book. Granted, I did not use the compiler generator ANTLR for my lexer because I created my own hand-crafted interpreter. But nevertheless, the book does not focus solely on this ANTLR compiler generator. So, even if you do not use ANTLR, the book will be a valuable asset in your journey for creating a compiler. But if you do use ANTLR, even the better for you because this is the tool the author uses.

This is a great book for those who want to learn how to write and exploit parsing technology to create DSL (domain specific languages) and transform programs using parsing technology when regular expressions won't do the job or are too complex to be coded easily.The book discusses many aspects of compiler technology and interpreter technology. It will help you write a compiler or interpreter using ANTLR3. It goes in depth into the many things you need to know such as - LL(1), LL(k), and LL(*) parsers and symbol tools.The book instructs one in how to use ANTLR - which is the lexer/parser generator which the author of the book makes freely available. ANTLR is the most powerful generator on the market today and used by many companies such as Oracle.To get the most from this informative book, you should also buy "The Definitive ANLTR 4 Reference" which Amazon also sells.Parr is a genius. He has produced the definitive parser generator and the definitive books that enable one to use this generator. Even if one will not use ANTLR, the books are valuable for their overview and in depth discussion of writing compilers and parsers.Note that the book does not discuss some things necessary for writing a world class compiler such as register allocation. I'm using it to write translators from one language to another and in that application its advice is spot on and extremely helpful.

Breaks down aspects of Compilers and other Language Applications into easy to understand patterns. Very useful. Had to relearn Java to implement the patterns... but that's cause I didn't bother translating the patterns into more familiar languages... In first few chapters you get an overview that really lays out the common forms these programs will come in. Very valuable book.

This book was written in a format that even a child could understand. It is just an out line but it does give you an idea about how much work it is especially learning about the different breeds and the care that is needed. The down side was there were a lot of misspelled words and broken sentences. Fix that and it's a handy little book.

Not really a "book" more like a pamphlet. Only 20 pages, contains 1 paragraph about each of the common tools. Tells you to look online for prices and dog grooming school. Full of typos.

But the original is fragmented, and unclear, so if you just want to appreciate the story, this is NOT the edition you want.Here's the opening paragraph:"He who saw the deep, the country's foundation[who] knew ... , was wise in all matters."If you want to just read it, [who] and missing words "..." are just an annoyance. And it goes on like this.If you are researching, the faithful representation may be a plus, if you just wanted to get familiar with the story, as I did, you'll want a different edition.

An amazing epic entailing the life of Gilgamesh, a king by birthright who is two-thirds divine, as he encounters his only equal. Together with the wild man, Enkidu, Gilgamesh wrestles with the bull of heaven and takes on the guardian of a divine forest. This tale depicts an all-but-immortal man as he fights against the control of his gods and struggles with the inevitability of his eventual demise.This edition of the Epic of Gilgamesh contains multiple translations of the story, each based upon the various tablets that have been uncovered. The author gives their input on the story as you read, as well as any relevant background information, to aid you in understanding each tablet.This book was fantastic and I highly recommend it to history nerds, epic fans, and anyone who appreciates a good story.

Needed it for a college class. Make sure you buy the right copy of this book because there are different translations and formats. This particular version could be better because the print is pretty small and close together on the page where other versions have more pages with bigger font.

A spellbinding journey backwards in time, from the standard Babylonian version of the epic to the much older Sumerian poems from which it slowly evolved. Professor Andrew George’s rendering into English of these ancient texts displays all the virtues of an original poetical work, while maintaining throughout an unaltered sense of antiquity and authenticity. Moreover, the author’s scholarly meticulousness provides us with a fascinating glimpse into the tools and methods of assyriology, a field of study otherwise virtually inaccessible to the lay reader.

I bought this for my daughter for a school project and she enjoyed the book which means a) she either lied or b) is kind of a nerd, or c) both. The good news is we still have the book at home.

I've read two Penguin Classics of The Epic of Gilgamesh: N. K. Sandars prose version, and Andrew George's verse translation (this one).I felt like I understood Geroge's version much better than the prose version. The intro of the text is divided in 3 parts. I found the last two parts ("The setting of the epic," and "The epic in its context: myth, religion and wisdom") particularly gripping. I did not like the first part, "Gilgamesh and Ancient Mesopotamian Literature," because it was largely a history of how the tablets were discovered. Onto the epic: although having missing text was disappointing at times, I learned to accept it as something that can't be helped and instead enjoyed what was available. The way the text is written out with brackets, ellipsis, and so forth lets you see what is available in the Gilgamesh tablets. I liked this because I was able to compare it alongside the prose version and see what was likely added on by N. K. Sandars. The parts that did coincide with both of the texts was highly moving even though sometimes it was simplistic. But I guess that is what makes Gilgamesh a classic: its ability to take universal themes and deal with them in an understandable manner. Overall, this thrilled me.

By reviewing every available version of the epic, combining them so as to do away with any significant gaps in the story,, and transforming the rather stilted verse into smoothly flowing prose, the epic becomes far more readable. I would recommend this edition to any teachers and professors introducing their students to Gilgamesh, or to the curious lay reader interested in literature or history

I didn't want to give the book one star because my comment is only about the cover which actually gets a huge goose egg. There's no place to ask a question but I can't help but wondering who at Penguin decided that a detail from a PERSIAN ACHAEMENID Winged Bull Relief would be appropriate for a book translating The Epic of Gilgamesh. I can only assume that Andrew George didn't have any say in the choice. Dear Penguin: The Persians had nothing to do with the Epic of Gilgamesh; it is a Mesopotamian myth and the Persians were the enemy who conquered Mesopotamia in 539 BCE so they would hardly be well thought of by its writers. You need to change the cover in the next edition. Professor George can certainly suggest possible images that wouldn't be so ludicrous.
