Historically speaking, this two volume set fares well. Unfortunately, the techniques that are discussed suffer from both time and a lack of clear diagrams. In some instances, I had to look up some of the terms being used as they are no longer referred to as they're used in this book - "tins" and "zincs" for instance were used as cutting surfaces, but modern cutting surfaces are not referred to as these metal surfaces are. Another issue I had was with the editorial comments throughout this book. Claiming that a binding is of an elegant design while another is gaudy without having pictures of them had me confused on more than one occasion. Once past the dated dialogue, I was able to get quite a bit of valuable research and helpful hints that will make my own bindings better.

I'm the author of the YA series, "The Library of Illumination" about an ancient Library that is home to all literature. One of the duties of the young curator and her apprentice are to repair some of the wonderful old books that have been neglected, abused, or ravaged by time. Edith Diehl's "Bookbinding: Its Background and Technique" was highly recommended as a reliable source of information. I use it as a reference, and I have not been disappointed.

The book is a good introductin to the world of bookbinding, in particualr the part on the history of this craft/art. The practical part, being very well explained, lacks explicit illustrations. After all, as the authro says, one cannot learn a craft from books.

I got this book hoping it will give me some simple, yet thorough advice or guidance to book binding, as I'm into handmade paper making and would like to create different sorts of journals, notebooks, book covers, etc.The book has amazing historical information and detailed explanation on various techniques, but my level is too low and I don't understand much of the technicalities. Also, the illustrations are scarce and that's not a good thing for a beginner.Will look for another book on the subject.

super good book for bookbinders!

I bought this among others for my daughter. She decided that she wanted to get into bookbinding. During the summer, she worked at one of the big libraries in Philadelphis, PA doing for some hands-on learning. Now she is at the MIT library in Cambridge, MA doing the same thing. Nothing like the good old books.

Too much blah, blah, but can not find anything worth illustrative to see inside.

This is a paperback compilation of the original two-volume hardcover set by one of the 20th century's foremost bookbinding experts. It covers an enormous range of topics related to bookbinding - papers, end papers, cover materials, print, format, signature and sewing, binding types, slipcovers, inks, design, etc. It covers historical techniques (e.g., sewn-cord raised spines) as well as strictly modern ones (e.g., perfect binding).Much of what I know about physical book quality, I learned from this book. As a result, I do not hesitate, for example, in buying a quality paperback - because I know exactly what a quality paperbook book should be. Conversely, I also don't bother with inferior hardcovers.This thick paperback even takes its own advice regarding quality in that it documents its paper and binding approach. As a result of the care taken in the physical design of the book, it lays flat, has not yellowed, it is easy to read right into the margins, and the binding is intact, though I've owned it for perhaps 20 years. It's still like new.You should also buy this book if you maintain your own books, as it will instruct you in the proper techniques for minor repair as well as restoration. I wouldn't advocate restoring very valuable books at home, but there is much you can do with decent-quality books you wish to keep that need some repair.You might consider this book if you are an author, as it will set you up quite well to discuss details with your publisher. The longevity of your work may literally depend on it.A book about books - a topic any bibliophile should enjoy!

Eclectic collection, a must for those interested or new to Calvino

The traveling part is especially interesting, Japan I mean. Previously two parts are a bit boring and abstract. All in all good writing.

Reading these stories is like having Calvino for a house guest. They are honest, intimate thoughts.

These essays reaffirm that the Renaissance man did not become extinct with the end of that period.Italo Calvino is that unique essayist who had an encyclopedic knowledge and a talent to make his interests, observations, and conclusions so captivating, that the reader almost loses sight of his profundity. At the same time, he never falls into dilettantism as we follow his thinking. Who would describe the image of Ahura Mazda as a "pilot sitting in a cockpit of a plane? Who can make a piece about archaeological diggings of a pig farm from ancient Roman times seem, well timely? Who can take the topic of graffiti and the city and turn it into a journey that takes us from ancient cities, to medieval cities, to the present day that is not pedantic but insightful and topical.The true joy of such a collection is in reading a chapter in each section and making your own conclusions as to why they are cataloged in such a manner, or simply bouncing erratically from essay to essay according to your personal whims.Less we fall into a melancholic miasma of loss at this writer's death, it is reassuring to know that he has left us with a wealth footnotes and references for us to begin our own journeys. A very good book, if you want an erudite rendering of a variety of subjects. These days, people write blogs, formal and informal. In the old days, they wrote essays. Unlike blogs, which are interactive, essays are not, and this means that if you want to read a book like this, you need to have a smattering of knowledge of the subject that the author is writing about. This, I did not have.Apart from that, while he wrote very well, the writing did not engage me, neither the first part, nor the succeeding parts, which were more about travel. This was disappointing for me, as I generally like his books a lot.

I am a big fanOF Peter welsh so I was excited to get this book.however as an registered nurse I have seen numerouscardiac arrests from people who partake in cold showers-which serves to constrict the arteries. They don't call it hot yoga for nothing....moving right along to the exercise about jogging with your mouth open?NOT beneficial as the nose serves to moisten the air and more calories are burned wheh you exercise while breathing through the nose.....the advice telling YOU to keep a journal. ...well I did that for fifteen years..they added to my clutter so I threw them out....as for the rest of the book...Living with one cup and one fork is not quite my style...think I will stick with Peter welsh! !

I love to get to know other cultures and this book does that! The book allows you to step into another culture and see how they see things. It allows yo to understand why, and gives you the burning question in your mind" should i be thinking like this". This book has helped me think about material items differently and i know its weird, but it has made cleaning and straightening my house so much easier because there is less clutter. It is easier for me to let go of things and actually enjoy what I already have. I know this only one step into my adult journey in life, but I do enjoy this step way more then I thought I would

Great afternoon read, will definitely be giving this lifestyle a shot. The appeal of a lower stress life brought on by this practice is what lead me to this, and so far its working nicely. Admittedly, having a pup that likes to chew on things kind've helped in dealing with the clutter also lol.

It was a quick read but most of it seemed like the Spark Notes for Marie Kondo books which is not cool. Save yourself the time and just go buy Maries books, she explains it better. Some of the day suggests were a little strange, like the cold bath? but if you need a cheap way to get your life to a minimalist level this book will work. Or just google how to be a minimalist, because that is pretty much what this book is giving you.

I think this book is fantastic. I appreciate how it is written. I can't wait to read it again & practice the steps.

It felt like most of the book is missing. Very short, does give you thirty steps, but not much else.

It was not very helpful, at least to me. It skimmed over topics quickly not giving resolve. I think it could be more in depth.

I found it less helpful than I had hoped. It's basically a statement of the steps in a "30-day" process, with relatively little elaboration on how each step is accomplished. Also each step, at least at our house, might take quite a bit longer than the amount of time they suggest.
