And he learns to be invisible to the sadistic Khmer Rouge who can give or take away life on a whim.One day, the soldiers ask if any of the kids can play an instrument. Arn's never played a note in his life, but he volunteers. In order to survive, he must quickly master the strange revolutionary songs the soldiers demand—and steal food to keep the other kids alive. This was a gripping book about a brutal time in Cambodia... the 70's, the Khemer Rouge and the Killing Fields. It is told from the perspective of a young Cambodian boy, who soon loses his innocence, his security and his family. It totally captures the horror of the time and the effect it had.The book is listed as a young adult book. I wondered at this because of the horror of the subject matter. But then, we should be teaching our teens about the horrors of our times with the hopes that they don't repeat themselves. We can hope, can't we?The book is based on the actual experience of this young Cambodian man. The inspiring part is that ...yes, he survived, and has dedicated his life to both telling his story and involving himself in saving causes for Cambodia and humanity

I had some reservations about the distinctive form of English McCormick uses; it brought to mind the dialects used in racist accounts of the old south, the old west, and countless other settings where stereotyping has been excused in the name of vivid local color. But I found her explanation compelling, and I heard the authentic voice behind the language. I greatly appreciated the honesty in the story. It is a brutal account of the horror by which victimization bleeds into collaboration. It is a lot more comfortable to paint a portrait in the stark relief of good and evil, but in reality the margins blur. This book contributes significantly to the literature of twentieth century genocide. Let us never forget.

This is the story of Arn Chorn-Pond, who lived in Cambodia. When he was 11, the Khmer Rouge came to power and thus began the Kiling Fields. Nearly two million people died under the Khmer Rouge, one quarter of the population. It is the worst genocide ever inflicted by a country on its own people. Patricia McCormick, the author, tells this story in Arn's own words, and it makes the story all the more powerful. She says she verified, as much as possible, the truth of his story. She added to his recollections with research and sometimes her own imagination, to fill in the missing pieces, and says she believes the truth is right there between the lines. Even if some parts are not wholly true, the truth of the horrific things that happened in Cambodia and its people under the Khmer Rouge are true, and probably most of this story happened as remembered by Arn and related to her. Be sure to read the comments at the end of the book by Patricia McCormick, Arn Chorn-Pond, and others. One of the most profound novels I have ever read, and part of that is the way the story is written in his speech. It makes it all the more powerful.

I went to college with Arn and although I knew he had a rough life, I had no idea it was this heart wrenching! Back in college, he was always the life of any event he was in and made everyone feel good. I can see now where he got that drive from. I have a few more Cambodian friends and they all said they have gone through the same horrific experience. I cannot believe that humans can do this kind of horrible things to other humans and what makes this even more terrible is that the Khmer did this to their own people! But the books gives off a huge dose of hope as well. Seen through the eyes of Arn, anyone who ever thought they had/have a rough childhood because they didn't get the latest video game or the latest whatever it is a kid wants these days, should read this book. I am certainly going to offer this up to my nieces and nephews!

Many who work in the education field will be familiar with the issues of ethnicity and class as they relate to teaching English writing. In this book, the author writes that every time she tried to impose the rules of grammar and syntax on Chorn's story, his voice was lost. The book is published in "broken" English. Only people who spend a lot of time talking with people of "limited" English will know the unique descriptive and emotive power of these accents, word choices, and the simple "less is more" aspect of English as a second or third language. As an Asian-American, it was wonderful to read a book written in the voices of my first generation family. It is a voice we don't hear enough. This book will show kids that learning to read and write is about communicating things that are important, and ebonics, accents, etc. do not need to hold them back, but, in the end, will make their writing and their stories more powerful.This is an empowering book for anyone of immigrant descent, highly recommended for English teachers who work with diverse student bodies and especially for those whose students may not be exposed to such diversity. "A people without history is like a tree without roots." Asian-American kids need to know their history, and at the end of the day, the American bombs in Cambodia make this everyone's history. It must be respected and understood. And in an era of post-9/11 anti-immigrant prejudice, it doesn't hurt for people to have a little insight into why people may come to this country.

Very insightful. I especially enjoyed Judge Greer who presided over the Terri Shivo case in Florida. That judge is a hero. His story gave me hope that even in a divided country there will still be courageous heroes who put country and the rule of law before party.

I couldn't put this down! Compelling stories of the cases that fix themselves in a judge's mind. As someone with no legal connection, I still found the writing and stories mesmerizing!

This book is a law buffâ€™s dream. Three judges have collected essays by thirteen judges who served, or are serving, on various lower courts â€” sadly but unsurprisingly, there are no contributions by Supreme Court justices or federal circuit court judges. The editorsâ€™ aim: â€œto demystify judicial decision-making and to make the process accessible to ordinary people, who would not otherwise get a ringside seat.â€ And the judges do exactly that: They describe, beat by beat, how they ruled on their toughest cases.You know some of these cases. EliÃ¡n GonzÃ¡lez. Terri Schiavo. Scooter Libby. And you will be surprised at how not tough they were to decide â€” but why they were, in fact, tough.For George Greer, who ruled that Schiavoâ€™s husband had the legal authority to let his brain-dead wife die, the hardest decisions were personal. Dead flowers were delivered to his wife, with a note: â€œno foodâ€¦ no water.â€ His church kicked him out. Law enforcement was stationed at his house for months. She declined a jury trial, refused an insanity defense. Much of this piece is the judgeâ€™s questioning of this defendant, who is extremely lucid here. And yetâ€¦Then thereâ€™s the judge on a Native American court who is caught between U.S. law with tribal law; a feather plays an important role here. â€œI feel like I can hear my ancestors,â€ she writes. â€œThey are telling me we canâ€™t afford to throw away our community members who make mistakes.â€ And thereâ€™s a girl who became desperately ill and then got worse because her mother poisoned her in the hospital. And a case in Washington where the voters went one way and the stateâ€™s constitution went another. â€œThey donâ€™t pay me to be right,â€ the judge notes. â€œThey pay me to be fair.â€I was particularly impressed with that judge, Robert H. Alsdorf of Washington. He does something you donâ€™t see often: he notes the compelling arguments of the losers. â€œI try to explicitly note for the losing party how laudable .â€‰.â€‰. its .â€‰.â€‰. legal argument is, and then give a straightforward explanation of why that factor nonetheless cannot be used by the court to justify a ruling in its favor. .â€‰.â€‰. We can acknowledge this without losing any judicial power.â€ And the losers know theyâ€™ve been heard.And there are fascinating breadcrumbs along the way. This is a compendium of a dozen or so cases, some famous, some not, by the trial judges who tried them. They range from the well known case of Elian Gonzalez, the Cuban child who landed in Fla. and whose relatives flew into a tremendous dispute as to his being returned to Cuba, to cases in state and Federal courts including an intriguing murder/insanity case in Washington, DC, a case in an Indian tribal court, and others, civil and criminal. A few of the cases are a bit hard to follow; others are fascinating. If you ever wondered what a trial judge thinks and how he/she goes about their duty, you'll find this a very interesting read.

This is a compilation of cases each written by the presiding judge that he or she found to be difficult for one reason or another. Some were headline cases, such as Terry Schiavo â€œright to dieâ€; Elian Gonzalez, the Cuban refugee child; and Scooter Libby, who squealed on Valerie Plane, was convicted of lying to the FBI, whose sentence was commuted by Bush and subsequently pardoned by Trump. Most of the cases were difficult not because of the law, which was clear cut, but because of the publicity and the involvement of Republican politicians in Florida and in the Scooter Libby case. The fact that most of these judges were elected and wished to run again and the lawyers appearing before them often contribute to their campaigns is an unstated argument against election of judges. This is a short book, designed for the layman, but engaging and informative nonetheless.

Good reminder that a strong judiciary is our best hope for continued liberty from tyranny. Most of the judges are excellent writers and make this a pleasure to read. I enjoyed getting the background and insight into the judges thinking on cases from those in the spotlight to the unknown but equally intersting cases.

I bought this for my son-in-law. I got the book from the library and read and enjoyed it. It tells background to cases that we read about 20 years ago.

This is a great story of forgiveness. The one star reviewer who said that the hero did not deserve forgiveness was wrong. For starters he told one friend that he was only going out with her to help him pass chemistry while he was in hospital recovering from an accident that destroyed his sporting career. Yes he was a selfish idiot but he learned from it because she refused to have anything to do with him. She consistently maintained her boundaries and was such a challenge that 6 years later he was still obsessed with her. Unfortunately 6 years on she still could not forgive him and it was her bitterness that prevented her from moving on.The author handled this theme with grace and I am so glad that she lets her romances unfold gently without any ridiculous plot twists or engineered drama.Beautiful gentle and sweet series of novels.

Unlike other authors that often make their characters too steamy, and stretch out the story by adding additional obstacles as they write, the story line stays consistent. This makes the characters and the story easy to identify with. It presents a realistic view that we can feel the hurts, mistrust, the need to protect one's heart, and the deep regrets and needs to set things right of the main characters. It is just the right length that it leaves you wishing the end had not come so soon, and yet it is the natural ending for the story. A solution has been reached. I would recommend it for teens and adults. In fact, it would be a great book to use as a conversation starter for a mother and daughter to read together shortly before dating age is obtained.

Sabrina and Trent's second chance happily ever after was wonderful. Considering how their previous relationship ended, it would take a miracle for them to get back together. It was heartwarming to see how Trent went about getting Sabrina to trust him again. Love this series, looking forward to the next story.

As the synopsis described this was such a sweet story. Always great reading emotional perspectives of both sides. The story line flowed and kept my interest throughout. Looking forward to more stories from this author.

But,I really don't like reviews. Too often they are just a short version of the story. So,this is my 20 word review!â—ï¸

The novel was amazing but it wasn't long enough. It jumped to the end to fast. It could have been more descriptive with their life. It was amazing though knowing you just never know who your heart is going to fall in love with or who will become your soulmate.

Loved seeing Trent prove he was not how Sabrina thought he was and watching her come to a place of forgiveness and being able to move forward.
