I very much liked this largely fictional narrative inspired by the siege of Sarajevo and centered on the lives and especially the thoughts of three people in that oppressive, violent and very threatening setting. A cellist witnesses the deaths of 22 people by a mortar, and he responds by playing Albinoni's adagio at the site daily for 22 days but is otherwise silent. The book follows two men and their rumination S in their daily quit struggle to survive on an almost vegetative level. It also follows a young woman under the pseudonym of Arrow in her dedication to shooting only enemy soldiers and in her assignment to track and kill the enemy sniper assigned to assassinate the cellist. I a setting of relative hopelessness the three quietly evolve and develop greater senses of their selves and their dignity. The story is relatively short and beautifully written. It describes two men in their almost vegetative survival, ans a young woman sniper with the pseudonym of arrow who is assigned to protect

I loved how well it was written. Third person and with full details which captivated my attention. I had a virtual experience with each chapter I read and for each of the writer's characters. Well done!

Beautiful book, and terrific price!

This is a massive book and an amazing overview of the great work of Penn. Irving Penn had so many interests and styles with his photography which makes the execution of this book even more spectacular. They do a great job covering his major work: portraits, fashion, documentary and fine art. The book itself is very well done with great images and layouts. Every chapter opens with some background on his influences and a history of how the work was developed and received.Looking at other Penn books this book leaves out little and does a great job of giving us and in depth yet thorough look at his career. If your into Irving Penn you'll already have this and just beginning to research Penn, this is a great place to start.

Excellent companion to the exhibit...allowing for detailed remembering of my visit and further knowledge of a great artist.

Review

Praise for For Discrimination“Kennedy is one of our most important and perceptive writers on race and the law, and the mere fact that he wrote this book is all the justification necessary for reading it. For Discrimination is a heartfelt and tautly argued defense of affirmative action, a smart, concise refresher of the liberal position that is well worth the general reader’s attention.”—Washington Post “Refreshingly honest. . . . Beginning with its provocative title, For Discrimination is a profoundly honest work on a topic frequently marked by mendacity.” —New Republic  “Kennedy offers a clear-eyed take on America’s battle over affirmative action and diversity. . . . He goes straight at the issue with fearlessness and a certain cheekiness.” —Los Angeles Times “Compelling. . . . Powerful. . . . Rare intellectual honesty and fair-mindedness . . . Kennedy deftly presents the case against affirmative action—and explains why he supports it anyway.” —Wall Street Journal“Meticulously argued. . . . An illuminating, detailed argument in favor of affirmative action and its application via race-based methods . . . Kennedy vividly portrays Supreme Court decisions as malleable, subject to reinterpretation, and even reversal not only because of the makeup of the court but because of the changing tide of political circumstances and public opinion.”  —Boston Globe “Kennedy’s For Discrimination provides supporters of affirmative action with the penetrating, concise, coolheaded arguments for racial justice they’ve been waiting for.” —Vanity Fair  “Remarkably astute and tough-minded. . . . Should be required reading for anyone interested in genuine equal opportunity in the United States.” —Florida Courier        “This is an important book. Kennedy, who admits to having benefitted from affirmative action, will force a lot of long-needed conversations with his opinions, conversations for which he includes abundant, solid fodder. This book is about as far as you can get from a casual read, and should be approached with an open mind, general legal knowledge, and a good dictionary. If you can handle that, then go ahead and make For Discrimination yours.” —Times Weekly “Provocative. . . . Important. . . . For Discrimination offers a thorough analysis of the topic and leaves the reader feeling as though he or she has just left a lawyer’s office having been briefed on the many perspectives on affirmative action within in the United States, and is now ready to testify in court.”  —PopMatters“This is arguably the most clearheaded defense of affirmative action ever written. Kennedy’s incisive analysis includes a compelling critique of a range of arguments by legal experts and social scientists on the pros and cons of affirmative action. In clear prose For Discrimination advances powerful arguments for sensibly defined affirmative action. This thoughtful book is a must-read for all Americans devoted to addressing past and current injustice.” —William Julius Wilson, Lewis P. and Linda L. Geyser University Professor, Harvard University“For Discrimination considers the definition and boundaries of affirmative action and why it is both championed and denounced in society, and is a fine pick for social issues and legal collections alike. It considers its benefits, costs, its impact on different racial groups, and provides a personal review of the policy and its many issues impacting American race relations. The result is a powerful assessment and history of affirmative action processes and perfect for classroom debate and discussion at both the high school and college levels.”  —California Bookwatch“Required reading. . . . Kennedy knows where the nerve endings are in discussing the complexities of race in America . . . Admirably balanced and provocative.” —Publishers Weekly “Fair and tough-minded. . . . Kennedy continues his strong track record of making thorny conversations about race and the law accessible to general readers, discussing complicated issues and court cases in a lucid, forceful fashion.” —Kirkus Reviews“Kennedy addresses one of America’s most contentious issues—affirmative action—on two fronts: the colorblind, race-neutral ideal and the need to address the impact of both past and contemporary racial discrimination. . . . A probing and well-considered look at the complexities of race relations and the continuing controversial issues of affirmative action in contemporary America.” —Booklist

This would be a decent primer on affirmative action for someone relatively unfamiliar with the issues, and who wanted to hear mostly the talking points of affirmative action supporters. It does acknowledge the counter-arguments, but this is often a bit cursory and -- worse -- usually dismisses them by proclamation (just announcing that the arguments are wrong or that he doesn't find them compelling). It's left-leaning, of course, but not quite as maddeningly so as I'd feared. Way too much time and text is dedicated to historic quotations extolling the virtues of affirmative action in flowery language. Overall, it's high on rhetoric and low on facts and analysis. If you're already familiar with the affirmative action debates, the book won't be very interesting -- except in the sense that Kennedy is an interesting and sort of famous guy. (I got the "Audible" version, which he narrates himself). This biggest disappointment is that I got few, if any, new insights.

Most interesting and clear presentation even though I happen to disagree with the author. On the whole slightly biased but should make some readers comfortable about positive discrimination.

This is by far the best history and analysis of affirmative action in the United States that I've read. It presents a very detailed history of the policies, as well as presenting a very fair, measured account of the different sides of the debate, and the evolution of those positions over the past 60 years. Although Kennedy makes his position very clear (he's for affirmative action, and for race-based policies as one component of it), he always backs up his affirmations with evidence and very clear arguments. This is a must read for anyone interested in affirmative action policies in higher education or other areas in the United States, and in the rest of the world.

I haven't yet had a chance to finish it - too many other commitments. But the issue is extremely well presented, and the arguments are well thought out.

The advance blurb from William Julius Wilson on the back of my hardcover reads: "This is arguably the most clearheaded defense of affirmative action ever written." I have to assume that Wilson is a personal friend of Kennedy's. This book is anything but "clear headed"; it isn't even really an "argument."Consider the critical issue of audience. To whom is this book addressed? I would expect a book arguing for affirmative action to address an audience opposed to or suspicious of it. However, the book seems largely written to address left-liberal objections to affirmative action. The chapter titled "The Affirmative Action Policy Debate," considers mostly left-leaning objections to affirmative action. I don't have any public opinion polls in front of me, but I'm willing to bet my left kidney that public opposition to affirmative action doesn't stem from it being insufficiently radical. So why not address the objections held by the general public?Kennedy's rebuttals to the left-liberal objections he does discuss don't amount to much, in my opinion. They are the kind of small, speculative points that would fit more comfortably in a blog post (or in an Amazon book review) than in a full-fledged book. Consider, for example, his rebuttal to the book MISMATCH, by Richard Sander (which I have not read). Essentially, Sander argues that affirmative action harms recipients by placing them in competitive environments where they invariably are outmatched. If they attended schools with peers who share equivalent preparation, then they wouldn't enter a kind of "self-doubt" spiral, where relatively poor performance confirms doubt, which in turn feeds further poor performance. Consequently, the number of black attorneys would rise without affirmative action, as fewer would drop out of school or fail the bar exam.Kennedy spends many pages summarizing other people's rebuttals to Sander before getting to his own (weak) counterargument, which essentially is to argue: yes the mismatch effect may reduce the number of black lawyers but "[a]n alternative goal is to advance the black community as a whole, a goal that might be seen as better served by whichever admissions regime will assure the largest number of blacks at the most elite schools" (133).In the margin of my book I scribbled "proof?" After all, affirmative action has been around for 40 years; at some point we have to move from the theoretical to the empirical. Kennedy doesn't really explain what the "benefits" would be to the community, but surely they should be measurable, otherwise saying "maybe the black community as a whole benefits" is the kind of glib, non-falsifiable argument I would expect to hear at a dinner party. An argument that can't be falsified is probably not genuine. There's also reason to doubt whether or not Kennedy seriously believes that the "black community as a whole benefits" from affirmative action because, only ten pages later, he responds to another left-liberal critique: that affirmative action recipients are overwhelmingly mixed-race or are children of immigrants from Africa or the Caribbean, who are not positioned to "provide leadership in the continuing struggle against African American subordination" (144). Kennedy seems to concede this reality but meekly offers (in my paraphrase) "don't let the perfect be the enemy of the good."However, if it's true that two-thirds of affirmative action recipients have a relatively weak association with the mass of African-Americans, can we really say that they are likely "to advance the black community as a whole" because they have an elite law degree, which is Kennedy's non-falsifiable rebuttal to Sander? Maybe these facts can be reconciled and harmonized, but Kennedy doesn't attempt to and I can't on my own do it.The remainder of the book contains little to discover. One long chapter looks at various Supreme Court opinions and criticizes the "diversity" rationale for affirmative action. Yet Kennedy doesn't provide a competing rationale that is as clear. Instead, he argues that affirmative action should remedy past oppression, which is variously described as "discrimination," "segregation," or "an affront to basic human dignity." Since his example of each is drawn from black history, it isn't obvious whether or not there is a straightforward application to non-black recipients of affirmative action. I was hoping for a clearer discussion. After reading this chapter, I kind of felt as if "diversity" was a more intelligible rationale for affirmative action (and an easier principle to administer) than anything Kennedy had to offer by way of contrast. This is the third book in a row in which Kennedy has discussed affirmative action. In SELLOUT (2008), he included a long essay on Clarence Thomas's views on affirmative action (that took up about a third of the book). And in THE PERSISTENCE OF THE COLOR LINE (2011), Kennedy used affirmative action as a frame for interpreting public debates surrounding President Obama's election and the nomination of Sonia Sotomayor to the Supreme Court. Now there's this book. As the books pile up, the analysis isn't getting any sharper. Will there be a fourth?

I took a look at the 8 previous reviews and cannot believe my eyes at the negative views of this book expressed by several of them. I would gladly give this book 10 stars if that were possible, as I think the author has written an honest and very sophisticated analyses of a very complicated and politically sensitive subject. I ran into it while preparing to write a new concluding chapter, to a book on race in American law and politics, which tries to explain why there has been so little progress in race relations since I wrote the first edition in the early 1990s. My college teaching career extended from 1964 to 2000 (with a year off to be a Fellow in Law and Political Science at the Harvard Law School--prior to Professor Kennedy's arrival), and I taught many courses in political philosophy, law (including substantial focus on law and race), and for the last 10 years a class specifically on Race in American Law and Politics. I found Kennedy's summary of the leading court decisions and his descriptions and interpretations of the various issues, especially in higher education, to be extremely accurate and fair. While I do not completely agree with everything he says, it is all reasonable. The one thing that really puzzled me is the book's title: FOR DISCRIMINATION. Perhaps it refers to the fact that he acknowledges that affirmative action really does lead to discriminatory treatment of individuals. (He suggests that the rage for "diversity" may be an attempt to package this discrimination to make it more acceptable to the courts.) I can only agree with him on this, and also on his belief that affirmative action can be a good thing if done carefully. Or perhaps the title is an attempt to sucker bigots seeking academic legitimacy for their attitudes to read it and perhaps be convinced by some of his arguments before they realize they have been "had." (I doubt that this latter explanation of the title is correct, though.)

Review

"Co-Winner of the 2000 Outstanding Book Prize, Center for Theology and the Natural Sciences""It is surprising that so little scholarly attention has been paid to [Einstein's] religious views. . . . This is a compelling, long overdue treatment of a neglected topic." (Publishers Weekly)"A valuable resource."---George L. Murphy, American Scientist"Jammer's fascinating and scholarly account of Einstein's personal attitude toward religion explores the emergence of his 'cosmic religion'. . ." (Choice)"Jammer is an excellent guide to the religious impact of Einstein's life and thought."---Greg Peterson, Christian Century"A superb three-part survey that deals with the role of religion in Einstein's personal life; his philosophy of religion; and finally the effect of his physics on theology, the most brilliantly entertaining section of Jammer's book."---Meir Ronnen, The Jerusalem Post"Max Jammer illuminates Einstein's enigmatic relationship to religion with a clarity and detail that no previous study can equal. . . . Mr. Jammer's readable study should long remain an indispensable reference."---John F. Haught, The Washington Times"Jammer . . . shed[s] light on Einstein's often ambiguous views of religion, beginning with his early religious training and following his evolution to the idea of an impersonal God. [He] takes pains to clarify widespread misinterpretations of Einstein's spiritual views."---Leigh Fenly, San Diego Union-Tribune"I can strongly recommend this beautifully written and accessible book."---Andrew Pinsent, Physics World"One emerges from this scholarly and readable book with a new appreciation of the uniqueness of Einstein's spirit."---Gerald Holton, Philosophy of Science

"No other work offers as broad an account of Einstein's views on the relationship between science and religion or brings together all of the different facets of the topic in one short, easily accessible account. Einstein and Religion also offers a badly needed critique of some of the many misinterpretations and misuses of Einstein's views. Professor Jammer is a noted scholar, science historian, and philosopher with the credentials to write authoritatively on this subject."--David Cassidy, author of Uncertainty: The Life and Science of Werner Heisenberg

Average Rating from me. This book is basically broken down into 3 parts. Part1 paints a picture of what Einstein's childhood upbringing was like and the "religious" factors (as well as schooling, towns lived in, etc.) that may have influenced his beliefs. I found it very interesting and would rate that part a 5 star. Part 2 is specifically about Einstein's very own thoughts on religion based on what little he wrote directly about the matter. I only gave this part 4 stars because the author took the liberty to expound upon what little was actually recorded and I think added a little too much of his own thoughts about what Einstein was meaning. Part 3 is actually described as for people who understand Physics (as in educated in it, of which I am not) and is very technical. I only gave this a 3 star because it really added no value to me. Thus we end with an average of 4 stars.

I bought this book because the title intrigued me. Like so many people, I had assumed Einstein had been an atheist. I have to admit to little previous knowledge of the man beyond his theory of relativity and a few charming stories about his eccentricities, many probably apocryphal. This book certainly provided a nice introduction to the man as human being, intellectual, and philosopher. One of the most impressive facets of Einstein's life made obvious in Professor Jammer's work was the impact the physicist's pronouncements, even on subjects outside of his professional expertise, had upon the public in general. It was apparent from some of his personal correspondence and from news articles in response to his papers on science and religion that the general public held the man in considerable esteem. There seemed an almost awed reverence for his intellect to the extent that his personal position on a topic as emotional and as arbitrarily individual as religion could assume an almost scientific finality, eliciting the commendations of those who agreed and an almost knee jerk response from those who disagreed. Few remained without an opinion. So potent were Einstein's mere personal, albeit well schooled, philosophical opinions that they could elicit outright attack from those who felt their cherished beliefs were under siege. A theologian as eminent as Dr. Fulton Sheen (later Bishop Sheen) attacked his position on the existence of a personal god as the "sheerest kind of stupidity and nonsense." While a private individual wrote to him suggesting he "take your crazy, fallacious theory of evolution [sic] and go back to Germany where you came from, or stop trying to break down the faith of a people who gave you a welcome...."It becomes evident when one reads some of Jammer's biographical material on Einstein that the man's impact on the people of his day lay in his character. His honesty, simplicity, and wit, for example, lent him an approachability and charm. His intellectual independence and courage in the face of the opinions of others made him both worthy of admiration and a formidable adversary, almost impervious to criticism. (When one of the propositions arising from his theory was proven correct by experimental results, he was asked what he would have said it hadn't been. His reply was that he would feel sorry for God, because the theory was correct.) Professor Jammer seems never to tire of repeating Einstein's dictum, "Science without religion is lame; religion without science is blind," as though it could somehow make Einstein's position on the subject clearer for the reader. However, much of his supporting documentation, while interesting, leaves one with a nagging feeling that one is no closer to Einstein's sense of religion than one started. In fact one is left with the sense that for Einstein the mere sense of awe over the majesty of the universe and its workings was all the "religion" he needed. He required no formal institutions, no religious acts other than being true to his intellectual curiosity, had no missionary zeal to convert others to his position, and was without a personal need for immortality. If he was asked about the subject of religion he responded with customary honesty; if his response made the asker uncomfortable, that was their problem.Probably the most interesting part of the book is the final chapter. Here, the subject of Einstein on religion is transposed to religion on Einstein (or at least on his theory of relativity.) Jammer's final chapter deals with some of the more amazing attempts by physicists and theologians to elucidate the existence and character of God by means of physics, in particular by means of the theory of relativity. It certainly casts in high relief the impact of the man on modern day religious thought. The last chapter also contains philosophical and theological outgrowths of the theory of quantum physics and some of its more esoteric premises. It also looks at the theological implications of the Big Bang theory of cosmology, and mentions the books comparing Eastern religion and quantum theory that were so popular in the late 70s and early 80s (The Tao of Physics and The Dancing Wu-Li Masters among them). As a mental exercise, Jammer tries to analyze what Einstein might have thought about each of these concepts, and generally believes he would have cast a resounding "NO" vote.

Not an easy read, but definitely doable for all audiences whom have received their secondary education if one tries hard enough. To myself, a physics major, it was definitely thought provoking and life altering. Grasping the physical concepts in terms of a philosophical viewpoint is definitely something that challenge the beliefs one holds true.

The first two chapters are very informative. The third is virtually a throw-away

Good book

Superservice

Wonderful and scholarly book.

I thought it was a pretty good summary of Einstein's beliefs. Jammer focused on Einstein's views and did not intrude with his own. I thought it was quite informative and well balanced.

Review

Advance Praise for THE LADY AND THE PANDA“A remarkable journey beautifully described, The Lady and the Panda brings to life one of the most astonishing and overlooked stories of American adventure, the 1936 quest by Ruth Harkness to bring a giant panda to America. Vicki Constantine Croke’s canvas is the mystical and wondrous China of the 1930s, her heroine a most remarkable woman, and her gift the ability to understand that this is a great love story.”–ROBERT KURSON, author of Shadow Divers“Mesmerizing. Vicki Croke has done a magnificent job of immersing the reader in an absolutely fascinating world. I found myself completely absorbed and could not stop reading. Amazing.”–JEFFREY MOUSSAIEFF MASSON, author of When Elephants Weep“Ruth Harkness, the New York socialite who journeyed into the wilds of China to bring the Giant Panda to America, now has the biography she deserves. In Croke’s hands, the intrepid American woman and the con men, dreamers, and adventurers who joined her in pursuit of the world’s most exotic animal spring vividly to life. Part Hemingway, part Treasure of Sierra Madre, The Panda Hunter is a rare blend of adventure, biography, and zoology. A deeply satisfying read.”–STELLA DONG, author of Shanghai

I love reading about the exploits of interesting people traversing parts of the world I’ve never seen, and this exuberant biography of a Manhattan dress designer turned international explorer held me rapt with one caveat that I’ll explain at the end.Ruth Harkness did not come from a wealthy, sophisticated family, but with determination, a flair for design, and a savvy intelligence that allowed her to read people Harkness managed to create a cosmopolitan New York City life for herself, even in the midst of the 1930’s Great Depression. She fell in love with then married a rich boy adventurer who hoped to be the first to bring a live panda out of China and into the US. When he died in the process, Harkness surprised all her high fashion, socialite friends by deciding she would be the one to take on his mission.Harkness ended up loving China, especially the wild, rugged, mountainous, densely forested, far western areas where the giant panda makes its home, and it’s thrilling to read about her rough and tumble travels, the variety of local people she spent time with, and the off-the-map exotic places she visited. But Harkness didn’t avoid China’s urban areas entirely. There was plenty of Euro-American drinking and partying when she stopped in international cities like Shanghai to gather the team, funds, and provisions needed for her venture, but unlike many contemporary Westerners she respected the Chinese culture and treated her Chinese expedition guide like a partner, even briefly having a love affair with him. When Harkness successfully brought a baby panda out of China much was made of the fact that though she was “just a woman” she succeeded where many men had failed--so far the men had been shooting pandas and bringing back their pelts. Harkness treated “her” panda with great care, trying to understand its needs and sacrificing her own comforts, but the caveat I mentioned in the first sentence is that it makes me uncomfortable and sad to read about a baby animal being taken from its mother and native habitat to be put in a zoo. Harkness agonized about this too, even releasing back into the wild another panda she captured.Other than that, I totally fell under the spell of this lively, enthusiastically written book. The author had access to a trove of personal letters written by Harkness, and retraced some of Harkness’s journey herself, so while reading it was easy to imagine I was right there, experiencing it all myself.

This book is a page turner for sure. I really had a hard time putting it down. It's the fascinating story of Ruth Harness, whose husband went to China with the idea of bringing back a Giant Panda. He dies and Ruth decides to travel there to check out his partners and where his money has gone with perhaps a thought way in the back of her mind to continue his quest. She is fearless in her pursuit of the Panda and attracts a number of people determined to help her get her Panda. This is all happening during the days of Chaing Kai-Shek just before the communists take over China so the atmosphere is turbulent. Ruth is considered somewhat of a dilletante because she is a dress designer by profession so at times it is difficult for people to take her seriously. She is part American Indian so this may explain her determination and fearlessness. Up to this time, no woman had gone into the wild hunting game. She trusts her female instincts in caring for this baby Panda and it works. Great writing by Vicki Croke.

Am only half way through the book, but am pleasantly surprised by how well crafted the writing is. I've recently been sucked into the little black & white world of panda worship so am reading everything possible on the topic. This true story takes place in the 1930s when our understanding of and behavior towards wild animals was very different than what it is today. Would NEVER want to see that type of behavior again, but this story is an important part of panda history. As mentioned earlier, I'm only about halfway through, but so far would highly recommend this book to panda lovers as well as anyone with an interest in the history of zoos or adventures in China in the 1930s.

What a delightful read. Sorry for the cliche but I truly couldn't put it down. Croke's poetic prose about Ruth's quest - so much more than just a travelogue - kept me mesmerized on every page. Besides the bittersweet story of yesteryear's fascination with (and mistreatment of) exotic animals, I was also left with a much better understanding of spiritualism, China on the cusp of Communism and America's support of Chiang Kai-Shek. And of Ruth, who was a tortured but totally fascinating woman. Extremely well-written.

I was intrigued by this story on many levels and wanted to read this book. However, I was disappointed in how the story was presented and told. For example, when they find the baby panda, Su-Lin, that became the first panda to come to America, the story line was lacking in many ways. More detail was needed on this part of finding this baby. It would have been nice to have read more details about Su-Lin's time at the zoo. This is a good book for a general biography of Ruth Harkness. She was an intriguing lady in her own right during a time when women were coming into their own. Ruth got to witness China and Shanghai during its best years, as well as during the war.

This was an interesting book of another period in history. It would have been most enlightening to have been able to read Ruth Harkness' actual book. I felt most sorrowful for the pandas who where caught in the tug-of-war between mighty egos which led to many animals' deaths.

Slow reading at first but became more interesting as the the chapters became more descriptive of Ruth Harknessadventures and experiences in pursuing her successful featIn bringing a live Panda for people to witness and see plus the world as well..
