This is a wonderful bunch of terrific recipes. Since I no longer go camping, etc., a number of the recipes were not possible, I don't think, for my oven. But everyone one of the photos and their ingredients looked so mouth watering I found myself drooling and I was just reading the recipes. The rest of the cookbook is exactly what I wanted. I LOVED IT.

I don't know which I like more....... The recipes or the stories?! One of my favorite cast iron cookbooks I've bought. Simple recipes to follow. I won't use all the recipes but I never use "every" recipe from any cookbook. I read all the stories and and side notes before using the recipes. I've posted lots of photos from the book as I love to see what I'm getting(from other reviewers). Nothing worse than buying a cookbook and realizing you probably won't use the recipes like you thought. There's a breakfast, cornbread only, main course, sides, desserts, seafood,breads and muffins chapters. All kinds of good stuff(the Amish Chicken Cornbread Bake! OMG like Thanksgiving in a skillet!). And the tid bits of another's history with their recipes or stories. For some reason just reading the history behind a recipe seems to make it all the better tasting. Very well done book. Great book!

I have been using cast iron cookware for several years, but this is my first cookbook devoted solely to it. For this review, I'll avoid talking about the advantages of cast iron since those are well discussed on the product pages for cast iron cookware.CONTENT - The Lodge Cast Iron Cookbook is paperback, but it has a thick strong cover and binding with a nice matte surface that I think will hold up well in the kitchen after many years. I get my cookbooks pretty dirty, but I think grease should wipe off pretty easily from it. The book is about 80% cast iron recipes, with a lot of short stories from employees and cast iron enthusiasts talking about their love for cast iron or sharing a special memory from cooking with it. There are also a lot of cooking tips scattered throughout that will help ensure your recipes are a success. A few of the stories are mildly interesting, but most I could do without and seem like testimonials that I could just read on the Lodge web site. A lot of things like "I can remember inheriting my grandma Sally's 40-year old cast iron pan and I make her famous peach cobbler in it every year..." But a lot of people who use cast iron develop a somewhat emotional attachment to it, so stories like this can be a nice touch and don't seem to take away from the actual recipes. Most of them are printed in the margins, which is where a lot of cookbooks usually just leave wasted empty space. The book contains a total of 191 recipes plus a dozen or so recipes for sauces, etc. There are 92 color pictures, which I feel is a good ratio to the number of recipes. Maybe a couple dozen of the recipes are reprinted from other cookbooks. Two of the recipes are reprinted from Simply Suppers: Easy Comfort Food Your Whole Family Will Love. Some of the recipes are reprinted from A Skillet Full of Traditional Southern Lodge Cast Iron Recipes & Memories. Four recipes are reprinted from Griswold and Wagner Cast Iron Cookbook: Delicious and Simple Comfort Food. This book has a strong focus on outdoor cooking (almost a fourth of the book). They give tips and details on cooking over a campfire and bean hole cooking (digging a hole in the ground and cooking your food in a pot surrounded by hot coals). I like that they have a table for specifying the number of coals you should have when using a bean hole to ensure the proper cooking temperature. It can be easy to just dump a huge pile of coals on top of your oven and overcook your food, which I have done many times with peach cobbler.Table of Contents:Pg. 7. IndexRECIPES - I have tried around fifteen of the recipes so far, including several of the Cooking Outdoors recipes, which the book contains a lot of. Overall, the recipes are very easy to follow and work well. They are not too complex and I feel that most of them are for cooks at a beginner to intermediate level. The recipes don't contain a lot of exotic ingredients that you'll have to go to several different stores to find, which is a plus. For the most part, they are all very traditional, southern recipes that I feel will have a lot of mass appeal.CONS - The main problem with this book, is that it seems like Lodge decided they wanted to make some money on a cookbook, and/or promote their products, so they just gathered a bunch of the best cast iron recipes they could find and threw them together with little effort for cohesion. I don't have a problem with the cookbook not being entirely original, but I do have a problem in that in order to make all of the recipes by following the instructions, you are going to need to buy about 40 different pieces of cast iron cookware. Lodge's main sellers are their 12" and 8" Skillet. They should have looked at all the recipes, and modified them so that they use a few of the most prominent pieces of cookware. However since the recipes come from different books, they all call for different pan sizes. There is no reason to have 10 recipes using a 10" cast iron pan, and 10 recipes using a 10.5" pan. Realistically, it will make little to no difference if you are using a 10" or 10.5" pan, but you will see that this problem becomes even more prominent as you look at all of the recipes. Several recipes call for a 7 quart dutch oven, and several just call for a "large dutch oven." So what is a "large" dutch oven? If I was the editor, I would have modified all of the recipes to say "10" or 10.5" skillet," or included a page about different sizes. Unless you are a complete beginner, you can figure out which pieces of cookware will work as a substitute, but I just think it would have been nice to spend a little time (literally a few hours) and modify the recipes so they all flow together well. Since they didn't, I will try to below.The following is a listing of all of the different pieces of cookware mentioned in the book, followed by the number of recipes that use them. When a recipe specified that you could use one or the other type of pan, I attributed it to the most common. You don't have to have all of that cookware, but you will need to know what to substitute. For the cornbread recipes, it's important that you use the specified size, otherwise your cornbread will be too thin. I would say to make the majority of the recipes in the book, you should have a 10.5" or Lodge Logic 10-Inch Chef's Skillet, a Lodge Logic L10SK3 12-Inch Pre-Seasoned Skillet (if you can only get one, go for the 12"), Lodge Logic L8DOL3 Pre-Seasoned 5-Quart Dutch Oven with Loop Handles (the 5 quart), and Lodge Logic 8-Quart Pre-Seasoned Cast-Iron Camp Dutch Oven (if you want to do any of the outdoor cooking). This will give you enough flexibility to handle most of the recipes. Overall, while I think the recipes in the book are fairly solid, it could have used better editing. If you like making cornbread or cooking outdoors with cast iron, this is the book to get.Update March 6, 2012 - I've had a chance now to compare this book with the other popular cast iron option - The Cast Iron Skillet Cookbook: Recipes for the Best Pan in Your Kitchen. Although I prefer the organization and recipes in that book, I would probably recommend Lodge's over it due to the pictures and the thorough cornbread section.

This is an interesting recipe book containing unusual recipes. There aren't many recipes I am wanting to try since most of them aren't appealing to me. I am more used to simple Mid-West fare. I will take some aspects from different recipes and adapt them to my own recipes. I was disappointed to find the recipes hard to read since the print is very small and very faint. A descriptive paragraph above each recipe is in dark print and more easily read but the recipe itself is very hard to read for me. I liked the dark paragraph subjects which were food hints, personal antidotes regarding food preparation, and lots of history. The cover is a soft cover but seems to be coated to prevent stains. I'm glad I bought the book to add to my collection but won't use it as much as I thought.

This is a lovely book telling the history of cast iron and Lodge, but not what I was anticipating. The recipes are for many pieces that I don't have. For someone with a real collection of cast iron, this would be a great and interesting book. I should have paid better attention to description.

Super recipes for those of us who want to get away from teflon cooking.Try the buttermilk biscuits-best ever.The stories associated with the history of Lodgecast iron cooking pans is a neat history lesson.Excellent book,and an easy read.

I LOVE THIS BOOK BECAUSE THERE ARE MANY RECIPES THAT I HAVE MADE THAT ALL OF US HAVE ENJOYED.I HAVE FOUR DIFFERENT SIZED CAST IRON PANS AND THERE ARE PLENTY OF RECIPES FOR ALL SIZES. THE DUTCH APPLE PANCAKES FOR ONE IS INTOXICATING AND I FIND MYSELF GOING BACK TO IT OVER AND OVER AGAIN. ACTUALLY,THERE ARE MANY RECIPES THAT WE HAVE ENJOYED REPEATING. IT OFFERS MUCH, MUCH MORE THAN I HAD EXPECTED IN THE TYPE OF RECIPES ANTICIPATED....NOTHING FOR THE LONESOME COWBOY LINING UP AT THE CHUCK WAGON....MORE LIKE RACHEL'S OR FOOD TV RECIPES WE LINE UP TO OOOH AND AAAH OVER.

Okay, I like the way this is written with great history sections, and facts about the cast iron skillets that are very interesting. I have only one complaint. The font of the writing in some of the book is very small, and I wear bifocals. It's not easy for me to read some of the paragraphs that slant, or are smaller than the other paragraphs. I also noticed that the print is located more in the inner folds of the pages rather than the outer section of the pages, therefore I am constantly flattening the fold to read the small print. This is the only aspect of the book that remotely bothers me. I really enjoy the book for it's variety, and diversity of content.

From “Black and White Together”Faced with diminishing adult support for protests in Birmingham, in 1963 Dr. King turned to the city’s young people. James Bevel of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC) suggested recruiting local students to participate, reasoning that since they did not have jobs to lose, they would be more willing to risk arrest. After being trained in the principles of nonviolence, more than one thousand African American students skipped their classes on May 2 and gathered in downtown Birmingham, marching directly into police lines to demand desegregation of local businesses, public facilities and restaurants. While hundreds were arrested and jailed, many more young people returned the next day to take their places. In the ensuing confrontation, T. Eugene “Bull” Connor, Birmingham’s commissioner of public safety, ordered fire hoses and police dogs to be unleashed on the unarmed protestors. Here, Dr. King recounts the “Children’s Crusade” and other important events that led to the end of segregation in Birmingham.After eight days of imprisonment, Ralph Abernathy and I accepted bond to come out of jail for two purposes. It was necessary for me to regain communication with the S.C.L.C. officers and our lawyers in order to map the strategy for the contempt cases that would be coming up shortly in the circuit court. Also, I had decided to put into operation a new phase of our campaign, which I felt would speed victory. I called my staff together and repeated a conviction I had been voicing ever since the campaign began. If our drive was to be successful, we must involve the students of the community. In most of the recent direct-action crusades, it had been the young people who sparked the movement. But in Birmingham, of the first four or five hundred people who had submitted themselves to arrest, two-thirds had been adults. We had considered this a good thing at the time, for a really effective campaign incorporates a cross section of the community. But now it was time to enlist the young people in larger numbers. Even though we realized that involving teenagers and high-school students would bring down upon us a heavy fire of criticism, we felt that we needed this dramatic new dimension. Our people were demonstrating daily and going to jail in numbers, but we were still beating our heads against the brick wall of the city officials’ stubborn resolve to maintain the status quo. Our fight, if won, would benefit people of all ages. But most of all we were inspired with a desire to give to our young a true sense of their own stake in freedom and justice. We believed they would have the courage to respond to our call.James Bevel, Andy Young, Bernard Lee and Dorothy Cotton began visiting colleges and high schools in the area. They invited students to attend after-school meetings at churches. The word spread fast, and the response from Birmingham’s youngsters exceeded our fondest dreams.By the fifties and by the hundreds, these youngsters attended mass meetings and training sessions. They listened eagerly as we talked of bringing freedom to Birmingham, not in some distant time, but right now.We taught them the philosophy of nonviolence. We challenged them to bring their exuberance, their youthful creativity, into the disciplined dedication of the movement. We found them eager to belong, hungry for participation in a significant social effort. Looking back, it is clear that the introduction of Birmingham’s children into the campaign was one of the wisest moves we made. It brought a new impact to the crusade, and the impetus that we needed to win the struggle.Immediately, of course, a cry of protest went up. Although by the end of April the attitude of the national press had changed considerably, so that the major media were according us sympathetic coverage, yet many deplored our “using” our children in this fashion. Where had these writers been, we wondered, during the centuries when our segregated social system had been misusing and abusing Negro children? Where had they been with their protective words when, down through the years, Negro infants were born into ghettos, taking their first breath of life in a social atmosphere where the fresh air of freedom was crowded out by the stench of discrimination?The children themselves had the answer to the misguided sympathies of the press. One of the most ringing replies came from a child of no more than eight who walked with her mother one day in a demonstration. An amused policeman leaned down to her and said with mock gruffness: “What do you want?”The child looked into his eyes, unafraid, and gave her answer. “F’eedom,” she said. She could not even pronounce the word, but no Gabriel trumpet could have sounded a truer note.Even children too young to march requested and earned a place in our ranks. Once when we sent out a call for volunteers, six tiny youngsters responded. Andy Young told them that they were not old enough to go to jail but that they could go to the library. “You won’t get arrested there,” he said, “but you might learn something.” So these six small children marched off to the building in the white district, where, up to two weeks before, they would have been turned away at the door. Shyly but doggedly, they went to the children’s room and sat down, and soon they were lost in their books. In their own way, they had struck a blow, for freedom.The children understood the stakes they were fighting for. I think of one teenage boy whose father’s devotion to the movement turned sour when he learned that his son had pledged himself to become a demonstrator. The father forbade his son to participate.“Daddy,” the boy said, “I don’t want to disobey you, but I have made my pledge. If you try to keep me home, I will sneak off. At the height of the campaign, by conservative estimates, there were 2,500 demonstrators in jail at one time, a large proportion of them young people.Serious as they were about what they were doing, these teenagers had that marvelous humor that arms the unarmed in the face of danger. Under their leaders, they took delight in confusing the police. A small decoy group would gather at one exit of the church, bringing policemen streaming in cars and on motorcycles. Before the officers knew what was happening, other groups, by the scores, would pour out of other exits and move, two by two, toward our goal in the downtown section.Many arrived at their destination before the police could confront and arrest them. They sang as they marched and as they were loaded into the paddy wagons. The police ran out of paddy wagons and had to press sheriff’s cars and school buses into service.Watching those youngsters in Birmingham, I could not help remembering an episode in Montgomery during the bus boycott. It was a cute book, very informational. Some of the content didn't apply to my class and the area we are in. So I would recommend only using the pages that have what you need. The vocabulary may be too advanced depending on the grade level. Overall I definitely will continue to use it!

Unfortunately, the book was rolled up and creased as the postman put it in the mailbox. Maybe writing "Do not Fold" on outside would have helped

Love this. A little wordy for my 4 year olds but they wanted to hear all the things a Police Officer could do so they sat through it.

Love this entire series! Very clear wording and great illustrations. It was perfect to teach my preschool class about community helpers.

A couple years ago, I also bought Launching the Imagination: A Guide to Two-dimensional Design (by the same author), for a design class. I found the book informative as well as visually interesting, and A Comprehensive Guide to Basic Design is no different. It includes the same content found in A Guide to 2-D Design, but covers 3-D and 4-D design too (hence, comprehensive). The supplemental art pieces they used in the book were both diverse and intriguing. It helped me think more about basic concepts and how to use them in my art and designs.

I rented this book for a sculpture class. I've read many design books, and this one is very high quality. I understand why my professor chose it. Very thorough, lots of photos and illustrations, but what I liked most was the very detailed explanation of this author's rules of design. Excellent. My prof is excellent, too, with a great reputation all over the U.S. for his unusual sculptures, and he knows what he's talking about. I rented this book from Amazon; the first textbook I've ever rented. It worked out very well.

This book is great! I am very happy with this book. One of the best parts of this book is that it is part two and three of a larger book ONLY. It is a bit confusing because it starts on chapter 5, so that if you only want to focus on the 3D elements you can. There is a 2D version as well, or you can get the whole book together. But the split also helps to reduce to price of the book a bit. However, I love that I can just focus on the 3D elements.

...which was horribly dry and frequently came across as condescending. This, on the other hand, is a good design book that explains the concepts well with a good voice, neither stuck-up nor stupefied. Concepts that most people are probably already familiar with don't seem to drone on, but they are defined well enough for anyone who needs a reminder or isn't familiar with them to understand. I see why my instructor chose this book, and plan on reading the entire book, not just the assigned portions, because the artist interviews look interesting.

I bought this for a basic design class in college as a beginner with no art experience or knowledge. The explanations, descriptions, and examples in this book do a fantastic job of conveying information without assuming prior knowledge about art. I still consider myself a beginning art student after just a one-semester design course, so I don't know just how advanced this book is, but I would definitely recommend it to anyone looking to learn the fundamentals of design.

This, coupled with my 2-D college course, were an excellent pairing. I find the book very helpful with an ample amount of artistic plates to reference. Easy to read and worthy of keeping post course (it will be in my art book library for as long as it will stay in one piece).4 star rating due to I would have liked even more picture examples of the elements and principles of design. It can get costly to put those color pictures in a book, but still more would have been great reference. Despite that, do not think this book is lacking in content.

The book itself is fine.I ordered it for my arts class. The only issue is that the pictures and images on this ebook are terrible. Most of them are blurred. It is very dificult to see the details on the images. I was expecting quality pictures that matched the printed version. I'm dissapointed at this ebook.
