This is an excellent, practical survey of the main areas of clinical ethics. I've used the seventh, and now eighth, edition for the past several years in teaching a course in clinical and research ethics at the University of California, Irvine. The cases are clearly presented, and representative of what physicians really encounter in clinical practice. The comments and recommendations following each case are thoughtful, well-considered and appealing. In class, we read the case out loud, and the class responds to the case with their own comments and anecdotes about related cases, or raise relevant questions.

This is a great book. I am teaching a Biomedical Ethics course with it, but I would recommend it to anyone considering a living will or health care proxy. It reviews DNRs, if and when to stop nutrition and hydration, surrogate decision makers and informed consent. The book illustrates concepts with cases which is why I got it for my course. The cases may be challenging for a layperson, but they may be helpful nonetheless.

Jonson and Winslade have provided us with the one indispensible guide to hospital biomedical ethics. I have served on three ethics committees since 1982, and have taught hospital biomedical ethics to physicians, nurses and clergy, This text is universally appreciated for its clarity, lucidity and authority. To attempt the discipline without this text is to be less than completely competent.

It was a required book for a medicine and morality course. It was well written; examples/cases of applicable ethical principles were highlighted. I would recommend this book.

A very clear presentation of how to structure an ethics consult. Provides an excellent summary of the thought process that goes into an ethics consult and some very good examples. Recommended especially to Ethics Committee members who are wading into ethical waters for the first time.

I now am the most ethical guy I know. Just kidding I was just forced to buy it for a class.

Journalism, as they say, is the first draft of history, and though R.G. Waldeck's "first draft" depicting the early days of World War 2 in Romania is incomplete, as all first drafts are, it offers wonderful insight into contemporary views of the war and the future of totalitarianism in Europe and specifically Romania. Did German officers really have secret orders to abort the Anschluss and retreat from Austria in the event of Allied intervention? Would a German invasion of the Soviet Union be "good for [German] morale"? History, as we now know it, has reason to doubt these things, but it's fascinating to read the views - either commonly held or whispered in secret - that informed the actors of the time.Throughout the book, Waldeck returns to a theme that is very relevant to our time of insurgent far-right political parties; namely, does fascism have a future in Europe? In the guise of casual conversation, Waldeck interrogates Nazi officers and diplomats about totalitarianism as a system and a philosophy; against the backdrop of the fall of Paris and the rise of Iron Guard in Romania, these questions are shown to be not simply academic (that these Nazis were seldom aware of her Jewish background is also a source of amusement throughout the book). Waldeck's conclusions on the subject place her in the company of Hannah Arendt not simply as a journalist but a political scientist.The book is engagingly written, making you feel as though you too are in Romania in 1941. I was sorry when the book was over, with only the grim consolation that the times ahead for Romania were dark indeed.

Written in the style of best and entertaining reporting and giving at the same time thoughtful analysis of a complex political situation, this book describes not only a few months in Bucharest at the beginning of the World War II, but genially pictures a prophetical view of what would happen in the region beyond the dramatic times it was published. As a foreigner who has lived now for many years in Romania, I can even say the author imparts a captious but caring picture of the country, which is still somehow valid nowadays and helps outsider to understand better its people.

This is great first person, eyewitness history dressed up as fiction. To me as an American I have realized that I don't know how a police state really works. This book explains its cruel effectiveness and puts it into the context of depraved fundamentalist terror. It is all being repeated in Iraq and Syria today and in the prisons of America's allies across the Middle East. One can only hope the retreat from this barbarity comes soon.

What an interesting perspective: That Hitler wasn't completely mad, that he had plans for all of Europe, and many people in place implementing (sometimes undermining) those plans; that the Palace provided back-channel opportunities for fraternization and communication amongst "frenemies"; that the Nazi's totally underestimated the will and manufacturing capacity of America; how differently things might have turned out had the Intelligence and quicker communications we suffer in modern times been available then. Perhaps his error was simply biting off more than he could chew. All of which serves to highlight Russia's recent activities on its southern flank.

A fascinating story of how the Nazis operated by taking over inch by inch. Also surprising to learn that Hitler's vision for Europe was not much different than what is being constructed today.

very well written, a historical document (remember it was written about 1942) describing the meltdown of greater Rumania to a bout half its size. It touches me personally - I know some of it from personal experience.

Pretty good, not spectacular so no fifth star -- but it's definitely one of the best books I've read about Romania and the one that most clarified the political machinations of the 1940s.

small but a lot of info

Another volume in the Edible Series, Figs emphasizes the classical history of the fruit (i.e. Greek and Roman), the spreading cultivation of the tree especially during the Crusades and the early conquest of the Americas, the two life cycles of the fruit (one self-pollenizing, the other requiring a specific wasp), and the use of "fig" in European proverbs. For me, the relationship of food status to distance from the ground was a particularly interesting tidbet.Unfortunately, the actual use of figs beyond eating fresh, eating dried, feeding to pigs is slighted. This oversight is partially addressed by the short collection of recipes. But this series as a whole are short introductions written to be interesting rather than comprehensive - each volume in some way fails to meet my personal interests while meeting mass interests.
