I heard the author on Colorado Public Radio and was so intrigued I decided to read his book. He tells two stories: the first is being the foreman of a jury in a double murder trial, and the second is his struggle with faith since becoming disillusioned with the fundamentalist Christianity he grew up with. The two stories come together as he is forced to decide between justice and mercy for the defendant, and finds himself reexamining his relationship with God for the first time in many years. This is not a vanilla, boring religious book at all -- it moves quickly, and the writing is strong and brutally honest. I learned a lot from this book: both about the process of murder trials and about growing up in a hard-core charismatic church. Reading this book made me glad that I don't have personal experience with either of those things, but I'm really glad the author shared his story.

I'm new to writing reviews and this book was much different from my usual choice of a sci-fi fantasy or mystery novel. This one was based on a real-life experience. I could not put it down. Dubler's style is straightforward and honest without extra embellishment. His writing is clear and he mixes the action of the story with his reflections so that they blend together to carry us along on his journey.Carl Dubler tells a story of personal transformation that was triggered while he was tasked with judging and then sentencing a murderer. He uses his own experience as an example of how a shift in perspective can almost immediately impact our happiness and contentedness. He offers readers an intimate peek into his upbringing, coming of age, marriage, fatherhood, and jury service to illustrate that we are never too old to grow, change, and draw our circle wider.Although I lived in Denver during the period when the terrible murders that brought Dubler to the jury occurred, I am embarrassed to admit that I had no recollection of them as I read Dubler’s story. The story of the loss of such promising young people was heartbreaking and compelling. As I said before -- I couldn't stop reading.Dubler shows us that focusing on following rules to meet the expectations of "others" rather than defining our own terms sends us unawares into a death spiral of isolation, crushing our best selves and the people we love most. Could this be what Jesus meant when he said "Those who believe in me will never die"? Maybe to seek life everlasting is about getting out of bed every day and living our lives as fully as we can.The huge shift in Dubler's perspective and its positive effect in his life offers hope that any of us may make room in our life for happiness if we divert our attention to that which deserves our attention.

This is a fantastic and highly readable book. It combines an honest and unfiltered faith journey with a very compelling true story of crime and punishment. I was riveted by Dubler’s narrations of the jury room. He does a great job of putting the reader there. I have asked myself many times, both while I read and after, what I would have done if I was sitting in that jury box. Very highly recommended.

No formal bibliography.In summary, I really enjoyed this book and in fact wanted more. Dershowitz does a wonderful job of making this complex topic accessible to the masses and does so with the panache that characterizes him. This is not an in-depth tome and at times can be repetitive. That being said, this is a welcomed secular narrative. In a nutshell, the main premise of this book is that the best way to build an effective foundation of rights is on agreed-upon wrongs of the past that we should avoid. In other words, from human experiences. If you are looking for a worthwhile concise book on the origin of rights, you won't find many books better. Alan M. Dershowitz is probably one of the most intellectual men in the business of law and is able to describe to other just what is going on with the law and why. Here he writes about right from wrongs. Get it read it, understand it. Great reading of course.

The author does exactly what he associates with the typical lawyer's approach in that he only presents as much argument as he feels will support his position, and then stops before his argument reaches 'the rest of the story'. As he explores the theory of the origin of rights. he actually stops short of the rational, logical 'real' next step to the source of rights, and specifically refuses to acknowledge an independent and absolute higher power.His treatment of the 'rights' of minorities fails to consider the vast dangers our society is currently experiencing and failing to recognize. In our society, 'rights' are being defined by the vocal minority and the bleeding heart liberal legal system while trampling the will of the silent majority who are allowing this to happen.I invested the one-cent price plus shipping I found on Amazon to keep myself informed regarding what some current 'thinkers' are thinking. This author definitely has his own agenda which determines the content of his theory.I would highly recommend this book for thinking people who will draw their own conclusions instead of simply nodding their heads in blind agreement. His argument will help you in further refining your own.Oops, now he's WAY over the line. Wait 'till you read his position or organ transplant 'donations'. According to him, YOU don't own your body, your FAMILLY doesn't own your body. The GOVERNMENT does. Talk about the slippery slope. I sure hope THIS isn't in Obie-care. The panels will ALWAYS find you beyond hope in order to maintain the supply of transplant organs. They'll make you an offer you can't refuse - 'cause you're dead!

The California Constitution begins with a statement that all rights arise from God. The Federal Constitution makes nomention of God at all. The Declaration of Independence relies on a philosophy of natural rights...eg. the rights to life, liberty and happiness. Professor Dershowitz argues for a "theory of rights" that derive from a community's experience of harm or injustice. I would agree that he correctly determines the "source of rights", but, I think, different communities will have different perceptions of injustices as well as conflicting solutions. (I might add that human nature is imperfect and many societies use scapegoats to address a problem). So when the Germans were crippled by the peace terms with the Allied powers after the conclusion of World War I, what should the solution have been? Or in abortion cases, do we place emphasis on the right of the fetus to life or the right of the woman to choose? Therefore, there can be no universal system of rights, even though most societies punish murder, theft, and adultery.Historically, there will also be an interrelationship between a community's religion and law, a determination of rights thatDershowitz studiously avoids. For example, in many Moslem cultures, the Koran will influence the determination of rights - e.g. the rights belonging to someone who practices Islam versus, let's say, the rights of someone who worships idols.Nevertheless, Professor Dershowitz forces us to think about these great issues and develop new rights or expand old ones if communities can minimize injustice. A worthy read.

It was as described, but pay close attention to those dimensions. It was smaller than I thought it would be. Only after I got it and grabbed a ruler did I realize that the BCP I had as a gift from years ago is now called the "enlarged" edition (though it's still only the size of a smallish Bible). This "standard" size is quite small, pocket-size I'd say.Leather binding feels nice in the hand, and the font and new typesetting is clearer.

This is the most beautiful edition of the classic 1662 Book of Common Prayer I've ever had the pleasure to use. Before we get to the substance of the review, a brief prefatory note might be helpful: if you worship in an Anglican / Episcopalian church either in the US or in the UK, it's unlikely that this is the edition of the prayer book being used in your church. In the US most Episcopal churches appear to be using the 1979 edition of the US Prayer Book, while traditionalist parishes and many Anglican parishes use the 1928 US edition. Meanwhile in the UK most churches are using either the new Common Worship books, a version of the Roman rite, or services created locally. It seems that if you want to experience a true 1662 service these days you either need to attend a sparsely populated 8am or midweek communion service, or be very lucky in where you live.And that's a shame, as you'd find out very quickly if you read / used this book. Even before we consider it as a prayer book, it's worth reflecting on the fact that many generations have considered it a masterpiece of English *literature*. The language, shaped by the confluence of it's Latin forebears, the enlivening influence of Tyndale's translations of Scripture, and the genius of Thomas Cranmer, is vivacious and memorable. It warns us of the "devices and desires of our own hearts", which we confess "meekly kneeling upon [our] knees". Couples coming to be joined in the "holy estate [which] Christ adorned and beautified with his presence" (marriage) are warned not to "satisfy [their] carnal lusts and appetites, like brute beasts that have no understanding," are instead exhorted to love one another as Christ loves the Church, "loving and cherishing it even as his own flesh." The examples could be multiplied endlessly - but perhaps you get the point. The words leave a delightful taste in the mouth long after you've finished pronouncing them.And this is a beautiful edition of the book. It's traditional look belies the fact that Cambridge took an old edition and completely reset it digitally - somewhat similarly to a studio digitally remastering an old movie or music recording. The result is an attractively laid out text which has gravity and dignity, but which is also crisp and clear, so easy to read. The point size is generous for such a small volume (except the prefaces), and would be easily readable by most folks (and if you need large type, Cambridge do an large-print edition too:BCP Enlarged Edition Black French Morocco CP423. The French Morocco leather of this pocket edition is durable but so pleasant to hold. There is gilding around the page edges, which just adds to the attractive feel of the volume. And it's made to last - I've had my copy for perhaps a couple of years now, and it's regularly used, and yet it's showing very little sign of wear and tear. It should last me the rest of my life, and then still be good enough to pass along to another generation.But it's not just a book to admire, either for it's quality production or its turns of phrase. It's a book to be *prayed*. And it serves this purpose admirably too. If you've never used a liturgical prayer book before it may take a little getting used to, but it's certainly easier to navigate than most other liturgical texts - part of Cranmer's genius. If you spend a few minutes with the contents page and the calendar, you should be able to work out pretty quickly everything you need to know to get started with Morning and Evening Prayer - and there are a multitude of online sites that can help. It will encourage you to establish or maintain a pattern of regular, daily prayer which can sustain you for a lifetime, as generations of past Christians can testify. The slightly archaic language may trip you up once or twice, but won't present much of a barrier - it's no harder than Shakespeare, for example (easier in most parts of the book).Highly recommended.

A very nice edition of the 1662 Book of Common Prayer. Although small in size, the 9 point type is very readable, and its small footprint makes it a very portable Prayer Book, suitable for use at home as well as church (should you be blessed enough to attend a parish using this, the gold standard of BCP editions). It can easily fit into a coat pocket and is very comfortable in the hand. The binding is more utilitarian than beautiful, but by no means unlovely, and makes for a sturdy prayer-book that travels well should need or want require.Although, as previously mentioned above, it is very readable, I would probably invest in the Enlarged Edition in leather, as the size is not much greater, and the leather bindings from Cambridge have a more personal feel to them.The 1662 Book of Common Prayer is important both from a literary standpoint as well as historical, liturgical and spiritual standpoints. Familiarity with the Prayer Book will enhance the enjoyment of nineteenth century literature as well as providing a Regula and devotional resource for traditional Christians. Every Anglican should have this prayer-book, and every Christian can benefit from its reading and use.

Granted, this is a very small BCP, but if you're looking for a handy sized 1662BCP, then this is a great buy!
