Review

“Not only does this book show you how to optimize your heart and brain health, but following this plan could even save your life.” —Daniel Amen, MD, New York Times bestselling author of Change Your Brain, Change Your Life “Though percutaneous-based intervention is often a necessity in the era of ACS therapy, the Bale/Doneen Method encourages a 'mind over metal' approach by focusing on both primary and secondary prevention. Their method demands a thorough investigation into nontraditional drivers of coronary disease, especially that of undiagnosed diabetes, often masked by a normal fasting blood sugar.  Finally, someone acknowledges the role of hidden glucose intolerance in the demise of our population! This book is an easy read and holds the key to our future successes in the fight against coronary inflammation. It should be required reading for every first-year med student as well as seasoned practitioners who stand on the forefront of detection and prevention.” —Melissa Walton-Shirley, MD, Blogger and Journalist, Cardiovascular Disease “Throw out what you learned in medical school and start over with the Bale/Doneen Method. A must for every primary care physician.” —Bryan Glick, DO, Founding Physician at N1 Health of Scottsdale, AZ   “I do believe that [Bale and Doneen] harbor the secret for treating patients with cardiovascular disease.” —Melissa Walton-Shirley, MD, Kentucky, cardiologist, TJ Sampson Community Hospital   “The Bale/Doneen Method is truly unique. It is a comprehensive strategy that allows me to treat the individual patient and prevent their heart attack or stroke because I am able to identify the root cause of their disease and correctly treat it.” —David Wright, MD, TN, The Wright Clinic

This explained WHY I stopped losing weight. I've tried for years to get below 192 lbs. I started at 200 and when I cut out soda, cookies and ice cream I could drop the 8 lbs to 192 BUT NEVER GET BELOW 192. The book explains that when you STILL take in ARTIFICIAL SWEETENERS that it signals the body to prepare for glucose. Now, it doesn't spike your insulin BUT when no sugars come down the throat the body goes into a craving mode. The body doesn't send the hormone signals to shut off because there was no glucose to send the signal. So, you constantly munch on stuff which is extra calories and your body-weight stays at that plateau. The answer is that you have to cut out sugars AND sweeteners in order for your body to "normalize" and become sensitive to insulin again. We saturate ourselves with sugars and sweeteners and then wonder why we have an obesity epidemic. Getting rid of sugar was hard enough for me but when I checked for artificial sweeteners it was really surprising. My pre-workout drink powder contains sucralose as does my protein powder. I'm 73 years old and really depended on the energy boost from that workout powder. But, I threw it all out. The protein powder I felt I really needed for muscle repair after a hard workout and there wasn't THAT much sucralose in it. Over the past 4 or 5 days, I've managed to drop below the dreaded 192 to 188. Hopefully, the trend will continue as I want to get back to my high school weight of 160.OH, NOTE THAT EATING SUGARY THINGS PROMPTS YOU TO EAT MORE SUGARY THINGS. Ever eat just ONE cookie? Of course not. That's why they sell cookies BY THE BOX and that box full disappears pretty quickly, doesn't it? Also note that the AHA recommends only 37 gms for men PER DAY. The WHO only recommends 25 gms. HOW MUCH DO YOU CONSUME?

This was a great book. My First heart attack in and then total of 4 stents in 7 years, I learned so much that none of my dr's had told me. Everyone that has a parent that has had heart event prior to the age of 60 needs this book and needs to make sure they get the advanced lipid profile testing done. Also, please make sure you get the 4 hr fasting glucose tolerance test done. People with CVD/CHD usually are insulin resistant as I was. My sugar and A1C were always perfect, so I requested dr to run Glucose tolerance test, and lo and behold, I had several high test results. Get this book, to read, not listen to.

This book was painful to read as it is poorly written. I wanted to scream, "get to the point!" repeatedly while reading it. Yes, it might be nice to know what one's risk of a heart attack and stroke are but do we really need to run hundreds, if not thousands of dollars worth of test to find this out? The answer is an easy, "NO!". The easiest way to determine your risk for heart attacks and strokes is to simply look at your parents... and your scale. That's it. And so what if you know your risk and you continue to smoke and sit on your fat ass all day. Exercise regularly, eat a plant-based diet, and take a STATIN if your cholesterol is elevated. That's really it. Niacin has significant side effects and has not demonstrated, in long term studies, to make people live longer. So, why would anyone suggest that a patient take it? I have been a physician assistant for 2 decades and would be out of a job in short order if the majority of my patients simply lost weight and quit smoking. This is not rocket science. Patients love to insist that we run these tests but it still comes back to the same issue - diet and exercise. I personally have a genetic predisposition for early CV disease but running the suggested tests would change nothing for me: I take a STATIN, exercise 5-6 times per week, and keep my weight under control (and quit smoking 30 years ago). We are to believe that a family practice doc in Lubbock, Texas has unlocked the key to eliminating cardiovascular disease, while the rest of the medical community is clueless? Absurd!

I have been using the Bale/Doneen protocol in my own practice for some years and have had extremely few cardiac events occur. On the contrary I have seen marked plaque regression and improvement in the arterial health of many of my patients. This book is easy to follow and shows patients that there is more to cardiac care and disease prevention than just lowering cholesterol, having stents and bypasses, and waiting for the next event to occur. Patients will feel empowered and in control instead of living in fear.By partnering with their physicians, patients can be actively involved in their own care and improve their outcomes. The ultimate complement that I can pay Dr Bale is that I have been fortunate to be able to engage him as my personal physician. The Bale/Doneen method of cardiovascular disease prevention should be part of every medical school curriculum. The standard of care aims to fix the house after it has burnt down, Bale/Doneen prevent the fire from ever starting. Cyril Wolf MD. Houston TX.

Provides the most current risk factors with emphasis on prevention. More could have been said about insulin resistance and inflammation, but the book was written in 2014 and those facts about insulin resistance were not as certain then as they are now. Not many specifics about diet. Not much of an internet presence like many other MDs & PhDs who have flocked to YouTube. He keeps going over cases that may not apply to your situation or be of help. 9P21, the so called "heart attack" gene, is in 2018 treated as a diabetes gene reinforcing the idea that the underlying cause of diseases of aging is insulin resistance. Dr Fuhrman MD provides the same promise - a medical free retirement with no cardiac events if you follow his nutrient dense vegetable diet plan. I recommend you compare the two programs if you have heart problems. You can read Dr Fuhrman's 2018 book "End Of Heart Disease" on Amazon & Dr Fuhrman has just as many success stories as Dr Bale.

African American Psychology ReviewThis book can be best summarized as a “science of the Black experience”.As a student of psychology and an African American, I consider this an empowering read. The greatest takeaway was the wealth of considerations in research, applied theory, and assessment of African Americans. There wasn’t an African American psychology course at my college, so I enlisted myself to this book. The African-centered perspective is deemed holistic, flexible, and functional for the personal and professional life. I’ve developed a novel appreciation for the pioneers of Black psychology and their contributions due to their mentioning in the book; I was surely unconscious of them. I’ve also learned, as a side effect, of the poverty of research on African Americans. Considering the time in which this was written and compiled, a healthy amount of research supports many of the ideas while allowing room for speculation. The authors performed well in their attempts to summarize main ideas while supporting them with credible references. Many of the theoretical perspectives they use to explain Black experiential (e.g., neighborhood, health, relationships) and psychological (e.g., cognition, language, identity) domains are familiar to the student of psychology. But they are not too remote for a layperson to comprehend either. Each chapter is written like a peer-reviewed article to maintain ethical scholarship; a format that is also familiar to a student of psychology.Surprisingly, or perhaps not, a lot of my preconceptions of the Black experience was confirmed upon reading this book. The validation of cited research is quite affirming.I appreciate the structure and delivery of all the concepts therein. Beginning with African philosophy and historical foundations truly primes the mind to digest the various areas domains of the Black experience that are later discussed. I also appreciate the breakdown of the African-centered philosophy and the authors’ integrity in disclosing the dimensional overlaps between other ethnic and racial cultures. It informs me that cultures tend to share principles, ideas, and constructs when it’s members separate and grow or come in contact with diverse populations. There is a healthy blend of identifying barriers and problems in the Black experience as well as presenting interventions and solutions to them. This suggests that although Black people have a grand wave of unique challenges that are intergenerational, environmental, and personal, a forest of efforts and advancements have also been made to enhance the quality of life for Black people. This book has provoked me to realize the meaning of nigrescence (to be Black) as an ever-changing psychological invention of the collective people who adorn and operate themselves within responsibly and creatively. I have also realized, as cited in the book, that it’s true meaning is best determined by sociopolitical and psychological outcomes. I’ve been reminded that although being Black has no conceptual meaning, the associated beliefs of the Black experience motivate me to recognize its necessity in assessing and improving life opportunities. The book has a few minor errors, but it is thorough and methodical. I value that it highlights demands for future research as it relates to the Black experience for students of AA Psychology. A worthy add to ones personal library.
