As a huge fan of 1491: Before Columbus, I was so excited to see that this full-color companion book was being published. I often reference the research presented in the original book and recommend it highly to others, and it consistently ranks as one of my favorite books (alongside Guns, Germs, and Steel: The Fates of Human Societies).Before Columbus is a coffee-table sized books with big color pictures. It is geared towards young readers, but the reading level is nothing to be sniffed at. It could easily be marketed as an adult coffee table book. The writing is mature and doesn't "talk down". It is definitely more at the level of middle school and above.This book follows along with the topics of the original, with three sections. The first section focuses on the ancient beginnings of civilizations in the New World. The next section asks the question "Why did Europe Succeed?", and focuses on smallpox and other diseases that decimated the Americas. Finally, the final section uses the Amazon rainforest and the mound-builders of the southern United States to show how indigenous people reshaped the American landscape. The book finishes with a glossary and list of suggested websites and reading. An index makes it easy to look up articles of interest.The photographs and illustrations, as well as the creative typesetting, makes the book very visually appealing.

This book is a wealth of information about Native American civilizations and history which I'd bet the majority of adults are largely unaware. If you ask most adults what is the "cradle of civilization?", they will probably name either somewhere around Mesopotamia or Egypt. If asked about Native American civilization, most will either say that the Indians didn't achieve civilization until much later (and perhaps name the Mayas, Incas or Aztecs), or they might believe that Native Americans were always rather primitive hunter-gatherers who never achieved "civilization". The state of knowledge about pre-Columbian cultures has simply exploded in the last few decades. If you have school aged kids (or even if you don't), I recommend reading this book for yourself and see how it compares not only with what you learned in school, but with what your kids are learning. I am betting you will find it quite eye-opening.The title is rather misleading, however. The book covers civilizations and cultures of the Americas starting way before 1491 and continuing well after the first contacts with the Europeans. For instance, the book opens with the Norte Chico civilization which consisted of a clustering of small cities, complete with pyramids, in the Peruvian desert which pre-dated the Egyptian pyramids. Moreover, scientists were always convinced that agriculture must be the basis of civilization. However, it appears that the Norte Chico civilization was based on trade between the fishermen on the coast and the cotton growers further inland.The book then explores the Olmec society, their relation to the Mayan peoples and their role in developing genetic engineering. It appears that the Olmec people developed maize (corn) by cross-breeding a small maize crop with wild grasses. Furthermore, they farmed this maize with other crops which mutually benefitted each other and therefore did not deplete the soil. This method of farming was the basis of sustenance for many Native American peoples for centuries to come.Next the book explores the Mayan, Incan and "Aztec" (known to themselves as the "Mexica" people or the "Triple Alliance") cultures and how each of those civilizations engineered their environments to adapt in somewhat unlikely places. Each built large and thriving cities (for example, Teotihuacan in southern Mexico housed approximately 200,000 people at its height), each engaged in trade and warfare with neighboring peoples and each maintained written records and had complex worship systems.The book then explores the impact of the early European explorers/conquerors. It especially addresses the question of how a tiny band of Europeans were able to overcome such a huge population of Indians. The traditional answers - the Europeans' superior arms and armor and their horses - don't appear adequate to fully explain such a massacre, especially since there are documents cases in which the Indians decisively routed the Europeans.At this point, the book takes a bit of a detour to explore how and when the earliest Native Americans came to the "new world". These chapters go into great detail, but it appears that the first migrations came much earlier than was previously though and perhaps by different routes. But the uptick is basically that because of their migration and because they did not live with domesticated livestock or pets, the earliest Americans escaped many of the diseases that plagued most of the rest of the world. Because they weren't routinely exposed to diseases, the Native Americans did not develop immunity to such diseases as the Europeans had. Furthermore, because many of them originated from a small group of ancestors, those ancestors may not have had the genetic basis to develop certain immunities even with exposure. So while the Native Americans enjoyed their "disease-free paradise" while it lasted, it was a disastrous liability to them when the Europeans brought diseases with them.One thing that struck me was the unintenionality of the disease-spreading process. We've all heard stories about the pioneers deliberately giving smallpox-infested blankets to the Indians, and that certainly happened later on. But initially, the conquerors didn't even realize the role of diseases. They didn't even realize what was happening in between contacts with the natives. Early explorers would describe a new land teaming with villages and people, whereas another explorer only a couple decades later would describe an overgrown wilderness with only small groups of people living in primitive conditions. What the early explorers didn't realize was that the diseases they carried with them had devastated native populations by 90% or more in the interim period, and how fast those diseases had traveled.The story of "Squanto" (real name "Tisquantum") is used as an illustration. Every schoolchild is familiar with the story of how the pilgrims met a "friendly Indian" who taught them how to grow corn and saved them by helping them survive the winter. What gets conveniently overlooked is how Tisquantum was able to communicate with them. In fact, he spoke fluent English because he'd been kidnapped by previous explorers and conquerors. He eventually earned his passage back on another exploring ship, only to find his entire village and family wiped out by disease. Helping the Pilgrims to survive was probably Tisquantum's best (albeit reluctant) choice for his how survival.Finally, the book addresses the frequent misconception that the Americas were a "vast wilderness" by looking specifically at the Amazon River Basin. Most people, when thinking of the Amazon, think of it as a vast, uncharted, largely uninhabited/uninhabitable wild jungle. But closer examination reveals that it is actually perhaps the world's largest orchard. Typical agriculture would be virtually impossible around the Amazon Basin due to the effort of clearing such large and densely packed trees. What appears to have happened is that the early Americans may have cleared the area one tree at a time and replaced the trees with food-bearing trees. In other words, another example of how "primitive" peoples engineered their environment in advanced ways.This book is beautifully produced with a wealth of pictures, maps and text inserts to enhance the text. Every page is a discovery that presents history in a living and exciting way. The book takes advantage of all sorts of science, anthropology, archeology, and other evidence-based fields of knowledge to flesh out the little that has been known for far too long about the earliest inhabitants of our land. I thought it would be fun so I got this book. I also got 1491. This is the one I read. I thought it was great. There are lots of picture of life in Pre-Columbia America. There are discussions of road and city building. There is talk about disease and where people decided to settle and why. It is exciting to see how organized each city is. These cities are better organized than in Europe at the same time.I am looking forward reading 1491 someday

Recently I retired and now have the time to pursue new hobbies, like wood working. For years I wish I had the skills, tools, and the time needed to be a good wood worker. I now want to build toys and things that will amaze my grandchildren. I took advantage of my prime membership to search for wood working plans. When I purchased this e-book I thought I would be getting a book of plans that included detailed drawings that have accurate measurements, a materials lists, and a set of easy to read instructions with plenty of pictures. This is not that Book.I believe that the Author Mr. Bridgewater intended to provide a set on instructions for a craftsmen. The book details the use of hand tools to produce the projects. Three different planes are used , a marking knife, hand drill, a hand scrapper and hand saws are used to produce these projects. Many of these hand tools are not the type of tools that most wood working hobbyist would even own. Most hobbyist own power tools and the only hand work is done with sand paper, The thought of taking several minutes to hand drill pilot holes instead using an air driven nail gun is foreign to most of us.No this book I believe not intended for hobbyist it was intended for a craftsmen making hairlooms by hand. I truely enjoyed reading it.

While depicting interesting marble-action games, the lack of dimensioned drawings and detailed construction instructions make the book pretty much useless for the casual woodworker interested in constructing the toys.

In today's world not many woodworkers make things by hand. The book is hard to work with, difficult to find basic stock requirements and measurements. I would not buy again.

Most of the photos are black and white and difficult to see any detail. The drawings are also in black and white and are also very difficault to follow.

This is a remarkable homeâ€”or rather work of artâ€”in Puerto Vallarta. I very much appreciated the description of how and why the house was designed as it was, combining elements as old as Moorish Spain with the most modern of todayâ€™s technology. This would be a marvelous place to spend a few days...or weeks.

I've stayed at this villa twice now. I really like the open-air design, high ceilings, and generous use of space--the pictures are beautiful but don't do the place justice. It is a modern take on an old colonial style that I think works really well. The book was a good read to understand more of the story behind architecture and how the house came to be. Looking forward to staying there again.

Cathryn & Scott designed, built and operate Casa Dos Cisnes, which is hands down one of the premier properties in Puerto Vallarta. Their labor of love is beautifully described in this work, and they created and maintain and world class villa and provide guests with a fabulous lifestyle experience. We are frequent guests at Casa Dos Cisnes and have enjoyed the fruits of their imagination, careful research and dedication to excellence. Bravo!

The Aslan Academic Planner is great for students and anyone with a busy schedule.The planner starts with a variety of spreads at the beginning followed by monthly and weekly spreads. The yearly calendar has very small boxes, but itâ€™s great for writing down all your assignment, exams, projects, etc. and having them all on one page. The monthly spread is very spacious and allows for maximum planning for the month. The weekly spread has two different lists, one with check marks and one with just lines, thatâ€™s great for prioritizing your busy day. I like to have a to do list and an assignments list.The planner itself has a beautiful cover. Itâ€™s printed on high quality card stock with a protective layer on top, so you donâ€™t have to worry about damaging the cover. When you open the planner and fold down the cover, it doesnâ€™t damage the binding as well.The pages are slightly rough, but you can still easily write and do brush lettering on it. Depending on what kind of pens and/or markers you use, ghosting and bleeding can happen. You can also see some ghosting from the printed spreads on the pages itself.Overall, for the price you are paying, itâ€™s a good planner, and you are getting a planner that is functional and great for staying organized. I would recommend this planner for those that need an affordable planner.

There is plenty of space to write daily short notes, appointments, assignments and reminders. There is also space to write about the yearly events in school or college. As a bonus, there are spaces where you can write your goals and focus for the start of every month. At the last few pages are where you can write all your friends', family's and acquaintances' birthdays. Plus, the cover art is super pretty! For a less than $10 schedule planner, I'd say this a pretty good deal. As a student, keeping a proper schedule is a good and productive method to stay on track, which definitely helps with your academic progress in the long-run. This cute planner comes with so many calendars, it would be impossible for you to miss out on things! It is beautifully made and I can tell that the brand really put a lot of thought in making sure that they produce a product that is both functional and aesthetically pleasing. Thereâ€™s a 2-page calendar for Cctober-December and I find that to be really convenient since you can mark all the important dates throughout the semester and look at them in a glance. Even in the age of Google Calendars, I think that having a physical planner is more convenient and personal compared to digital ones. For every month thereâ€™s a spread for goals and plans for the month, and that small touch of personalization is what makes me prefer having a physical planner over simply digital ones. I do wish that they would include more graphics on the pages since they are pretty plain, but I guess theyâ€™re just giving me a chance to doodle on the pages myself!

To be honest, I wasn't expecting much with this, but I was really surprised! It was a really nice price, and is highly functional! I picked this one because I loved the cover, and it is a really nice size. It has a monthly view, a monthly goals page, Email and passwords page. It also has plenty of room for daily checklists and notes. I actually use this as a Homeschool Planner for my son and it is perfect!

I really love the layout and the simplicity of this planner. I was currently using an Erin Condren, but it was just too big for taking with me every day. This one is perfect size and thickness. My only complaints are the paper quality has a lot of ghosting from my pens, and the cover could be a bit more sturdy. I anticipate that the corners will be a little worn by the end of the year.

This planner is amazing, and it is cheaper than my older planner. The cover is so beautiful and very attractive. I am attracted to this planner because the design is different from other planner and I never seen a planner with this beautiful design. I also love that this planner has monthly goals page that will help me to see what I should expect for that month in one page. It has monthly focus, two goals for that whole month and goals for 10th, 20th and 30th day of the month so that I can monitor my goals if it is achieved or not. I like the size because it is not too small to write on and will fit in my schoolbag without crushing it for being smaller than my other books. The monthly pages also big enough that I can easily write my plan on the boxes without worrying that Iâ€™m taking too much space.

I did not expect much from this planner because it is so much cheaper than the usual planner you can get from the market but IT IS GOOD! I put my old planner away after I got this. The cover is beautiful and feels so nice when you touch it. The thing I like the most about this planner is that it is so simple and the monthly planner is so big! I had problem fitting a few things into a box (day) with my previous planner but I have no problem with this at all! Its simplicity makes it looks clean and you can easily decorate it as much as you like. This is a planner for everyone. It is nice and simple for those who do not want to spend time decorating their planner and also for those who want to put a lot of colors in their planners. You can do whatever you want with this planner.

An excellent collection of essays on some truly great innings.This book faced a bit of criticism on the criteria and ranking methodology. While I do not think the authors were racist, as some of the comments at cricinfo seemed to suggest, I do not find the criteria objective. Nor were they employed consistently. But then, am genetically disposed to hate all these ridiculous "top 100" compilations. That is, my judgement on their methodology is to be taken with a grain of salt.However, do trust me when I say that it makes a great cricket read. It is a great collection of some dramatic moments in cricket history. The background stories in some cases and some quotes from more mainstream reports of the innings in question.Cricket lovers are going to love this book. I am looking forward to the one on bowling.

I have enjoyed all of Dave's books and this one was fantastic as he provides an unbiased, analytical approach as he weaves his way through the top batsmen of all-time.

Despite the title of â€˜great test centuriesâ€ this book is obviously on what the authorâ€™s consider to be THE greatest test centuries ever. Actually when I say authorâ€™s opinion, in actual fact thereâ€™s a rating system which they go into great detail to explain. They used ten categories on which each innings is graded. The actual method isnâ€™t given, neither is the points each innings received, which I feel detracts somewhat from the enjoyment of the book â€“ I would have liked to have seen maybe the top 200 listed with the points allocated, to see why each one did or didnâ€™t make the grade; maybe they thought the readers wouldnâ€™t be interested, in which case I think theyâ€™re wrong. Thereâ€™s also details of how each category was weighted to give the final rating, the heaviest weighing going towards the impact on the match, the strength of the bowling attack and the condition of the pitch.The book only covers centuries, which is too bad as e.g. Viswanathâ€™s magical 97 misses out, but I suppose you have to cut off somewhere. Most of the book is taken up with the descriptions of the 100 performances and, despite the fact that there are a lot of different contributors, this isnâ€™t obvious and the writing is on the whole of a high standard. Itâ€™s probably difficult for a writer to generate the excitement of a match in one page (the bottom 50 is one page, the next 25 two pages, and the top 25 six or seven with a scorecard), but mostly they do a good job.More than half of the book covers the top 25 innings, which features some of the best of todayâ€™s cricket writers, such as Rob Smyth and Ric Sissons, plus contributions from some players, including Derek Pringle and Dennis Amiss. My favourite pieces were David Frithâ€™s and Stephen Chalkeâ€™s, though the pieces by some of the lesser-known writers, like those on Clem Hill and Colin Cowdrey, are also highly enjoyable..Very highly recommended!

I've read this book and I'm very surprised by this review. There are many innings by non-white players featured, in fact considering that at least 15 were from the era when only England, Australia and South Africa were playing Test cricket, I'd say it must be about half, which is more than a fair representation. Additionally, the description of the very complex rating system used surely refutes any claim of bias - there's pages and pages of it!I actually wonder if the reviewer has really read the book - everything commented on here could have been gleaned from the web review over at â€œcricinfoâ€ and the Guardian's online extract of Graeme Smith's innings by Rob Smyth. There's no new information specific to this review.Finally, how does the reviewer know the authors are white? There aren't even any photos of them in the book!

When I was gifted this book, I thought I was in for a treat. But it proved to be a waste of time and even money (albeit not mine). This book has been promoted as the ultimate list of the 100 greatest centuries of all time, and the authors have gone to some pain detailing the 10 parameters that went into measuring the worth of each and every century ever recorded. But then, they don't tell us how those parameters were measured, or weighted. And the end result leads me to believe the worst: that they never wanted it to be a book covering all centuries, but just those by (or against) the white teams, specifically England and Australia. The final selection seems arbitrary at best, and biased at worst, baffling me to the point that I stopped reading the complete description of each century, but just skimming it to quickly get to the next (arranged in reverse order of 'importance'). For example, there's this match between South Africa and India which ended in a draw, with a century each in both innings by Kallis, and a century in opposition by Tendulkar. And BOTH of Kallis' centuries are included! Of course, Tendulkar's is not - so what's the point, that the match was not consequential for India but was for SA? Or Kallis faced much better bowling than Tendulkar did? True aficionados of cricket would laugh at both suggestions, as the reverse would be much truer. And there are more of such examples in the book.To doom it further, the style of writing is erratic, to put it kindly. The authors have chosen to invite prominent cricket writers to describe each century, and while most of it is typically (and expectedly) hagiographic, a bunch of it is rather boring. Many of the pieces seem to forget that they were to describe (praise) that particular effort to score that century, and go about praising the batsman's entire career, which completely takes away the focus. Case in point, the piece on Graeme Smith's 154 against England in 2008 starts with the final stroke that won SA the game and left Smith at 154 not out, and informs us that this was an epic effort, repeats that opinion, and then quickly gives us a run down of Smith's career, complete with all sorts of statistics, SA's journey, and ends up with their post-match activities including a fire-alarm in the hotel at night. What it does not give us, is how the match was played overall, what sort of challenge Smith faced when he came in to bat, who else played a part worth mentioning, how good the opposition bowling was - none of that! Maybe they should have allowed some Asian writers to submit some of these essays - but that might have muddied their pool.So you end up with a book that ranks cricketing feats, whose rankings are suspect and whose writing is sub-par. Epic Fail.

I gave this book as a gift for a 12 year old who wants to be a Marine Biologist: his eyes lit up as he looked through the book, English is his second language and it helps to have a beautiful book to interest him

Book is exactly the size they show. The photos are truly HD clear. My nephew being 6 is a little young to fully read it by himself but he loves it still. He will grow into being able to read it.

I ordered several Dolphin items to give as a group gift for my 7 year old Granddaughter. Great quality and she loved them.

This book has great photos and pictures. A lot of the information in the book is presented in "snippets": a fact here, another there.

Great for a project.

The photos and information are fantastic - superb Nat Geo quality. The only reason for 4 stars is that the binding is quite weak, only just stronger than a magazine, and so the 'book' has already separated from the cover. Otherwise, it is great!

My 8 year old grandson asked for this book for his birthday. I was able to find it easily on Amazon. He loves it and would reccommend it to other childen in his age range.

Great book, a real scavenger hunt. My 12 year old son liked the other hidden Mickey book with colored pictures because it was more entertaining for him. But he's not a reader and it's hard to get him to read anything. He preferred the pictures over this book even though I personally thought this book was more fun and had more mickeys listed for you to find.

Because there is no table of contents and no hyperlinked index, it is cumbersome to flip through this book and find the section you need, making it a hindrance to using while at the park. I was hoping for the convenience of having this on my iPhone instead of carrying around a book while at Disneyland. But, because of the format, now I'll have to read each page and mark the info in my notes to reference later. What a hassle to have to flip through every page to try to find the section we need! The one good spot is that each "clue" is hyperlinked to its corresponding "hint" although it doesn't quite solve the organizational problem of using this ebook while in the park.Kindle versions of reference books should always have an easy-to-access, hyperlinked index and table of contents. When they don't, it not only makes the hard copy a much better value, it makes the kindle version almost useless.I wish I didn't purchase this book!

This was a great purchase. I have been going to Disneyland almost my whole life. Everytime I was there, I would look for all the hidden Mickey's. I found a lot, but there always seemed to be some that were missing. So I cheated, broke down and purchased the book.Best part, I saw the book at Disneyland and it was more expensive there than what I paid for on Amazon. If you are looking for a good activity book to kill time while waiting in line, this and Lots to Do in Line, is the perfect way to go. Packed full of information and fun. Great way to keep kids from becoming board.

This is such a fun book. We had one that was lost and I needed to repurchase it. It has been well used and we find something new every time we go to Disneyland. I had heard of some of the Hidden Mickeys but this book is great at pointing out and directing the reader to exactly where they are. This is a great thing for families who have been to Disney a lot and what something new and fun to add to the experience.

Fun, but some of the Hidden Mickeys are hard to find or the line passes their location too quickly to spot them.

Informative for about 5 years ago. Says it is current information but found only about 10 of the hidden mickeys based on the information in the book.

Fun to use, had a great time looking for all the "hidden Mickey's" this book says that are out there. It's very helpful and a great game when walking from attraction to attraction if you're not a "shopper" getting sucked in to all the stores selling all the same stuff as the next. This book made that much more fun to "hunt" instead of shop!!
