It's great to have all this material in such a compact form, and so affordably.There are (as far as I can tell) three e-book versions of "The Complete Works of the Church Fathers":(1) this one (ASIN: B01F9PRR92);(2) another with the same name but a different cover (which is the same as this one) (ASIN: B01N9DKZK6) - from the same publisher, I believe; and(3) one by Catholic Way Publishing (ASIN: B00KYBSUUM).Some specifics about the different versions: In (1) and (2) all the works are arranged alphabetically by author name. In (3) the works are arranged in a roughly chronological order - as in the 37 (!) big, hardbound printed volumes. (1) and (2) contain introductions to most but not all of the authors (useful especially if you are coming to these works for the first time.); (3) has no introductions at all, unfortunately (NB: if 3 had the introductions, I think it would easily be the "best" version available). (1) and (2) contain - at the end - a complete KJV Bible - with deuterocanonical books (aka apocrypha) as originally published - a nice feature! (BTW, a very nice stand-alone KJV with deuterocanonicals/apocrypha is available for a $1.99: ASIN: B01M0F1TKW.)Both (1) and (2) contain the same error: in Jerome's "De Viris Illustribus" (Illustrious Men - a book of about 135 short biographies (one chapter each) of leading Christian writers from St Peter to Jerome himself), the first word or two from the first paragraph of almost every chapter is missing! Unfortunately, in most chapters that first word or two is the name of the person who is the subject of the chapter. This is a weird but annoying error. It could be easily fixed by the publisher! Just put the first one or two word(s) back into the first paragraph of each chapter in De Viris Illustribus. Maybe (1) and (2) contain other errors, but I haven't spotted them. (3) so far as I can tell does not contain any typos/errors.I would say that (3) has the best layout, order of materials, and navigation, but as cons: no introductions and no KJV at the end.These e-books are very inexpensive. If you are interested in the contents, I would say would say get both (2) and (3). I believe (3) has the best navigation/layout and arrangement of materials chronologically and no typos/errors (that I've come across anyway). I would also get (2) for the useful introductions and the different arrangement of materials (by author name, which can be handy to quickly find things, and for the KJV), but with the understanding that (2) contains some errors/typos, at least in St. Jerome's "De Viris Illustribus" (Illustrious Men). After comparing them, I believe (1) is the same as (2) and produced by the same people, with (2) simply being a later edition (has a later publication date).
Many years ago I was a poor Divinity student (before becoming a Psychologist), I really longed to have a complete set of the church fathers. With school costs and little things like food and shelter. There was no way I could purchase this very expensive set. I can but give this Amazon set of evolumes five stars! If you are a student of church history or studying for the Priesthood, this is a set for you.
Nice collection formatting isn't that great. And Irenaeus's against heresies is just a collection of one paragraph per chapter instead of the actual book. Hope it gets fixed someday
Mixed thoughts. The material is great, however the ebook itself is not easy to search, nor quickly cross reference. For example, a search of the term “Eucharist†will take you to somewhere in the middle of the book, but, it is almost impossible to figure how who wrote it, and there is no indication or background information on the writings (when/where). Headers with author/title would be useful! Maybe even links back and forth to the index...
I love reading about the Early Church Fathers so I love all the works about what they taught and it is important.The really ancient Fathers did not have the King James Bible or any of the newer versions. That seems silly to say but the way I understand people saying that to only read only THE Bible; short change themselves. They don't seem to know at one time, there was no Bible but we did have heretics; so reading the Fathers, especially the ones taught by the Apostles is important even today. We did not even have the Nicene Creed that unified the authentic teaching of the church until the Council of Nicea. As Paul said, "you have your Traditions" .......well, today I want to know a bit of what the true Church Father's taught or said. It at times is it like reading a Bible Commentary. One of my favorites is Angels and Their Mission and of course the well known Jurgens set of 3 books..
What these things really need is good interactive pages, notes, and Table of Contents Going back and forth in the table of contents on a kindle is no fun. Perhaps it's the KIndle that I give 3 stars.
Even though it has the names of the authors (like Irenaeus) in the listings, it doesn't necessarily mean the book has their writings. For instance, there's a section for Irenaeus, but his writings are not in the book. Go figure! Very annoying.
