I love all of the Happy Herbivore cookbooks and couldn't wait to get my hands on this one! I expected only Thanksgiving and Christmas recipes, but I was pleasantly surprised to see that multiple holidays and occasions are covered. There were also great tips for entertaining. I've only had my cookbook for about a week, so I've only tried two recipes so far. The BBQ sliders and spicy Thai slaw were absolutely delicious and both recipes took less than thirty minutes to pull together! I look forward to trying several recipes over the next several weeks. In true Lindsay style, ingredients and recipes are simple. Several recipes are noted as either quick or have instructions for making ahead. Kudos to Lindsay! Keep the books coming. I see "Another Everyday Happy Herbivore" cookbook in your future. 😉
I like Lindsay's books as they are simple and very healthy. Previous reviewers are spot on when they say that many of the recipes are repeats and the "fancy pants" comments are tiresome. With that set aside, the book is very well organized in holiday categories and party suggestions. Often planning for the holidays or special occasions can mean flipping through various books for ideas and Lindsay makes it easy by organizing complete menus with recipes in one place. I would definitely recommend this book for plant based newbies who are facing the holidays for the first time or for anyone who gets intimidated by hosting the holidays or parties. Lindsay takes out a lot of the anxiety of entertaining.
An excellent book if you are ok with no meat, no dairy and no oil and you want ideas on how to apply this way of cooking to any holiday or special event. Works especially well if you use the "Full Index"You see my wife has medical issues and her doctor put her on this diet of NO meat, NO dairy, and absolutely NO OIL. I said I would do this with her to support. I had no idea what we were in for. The meat and dairy were challenging enough. But the no oil made it very, very hard. We took cooking classes this summer. The instructor always ended up using oil. When you ask how to make the recipe without oil the instructor looked at you like you were from another planet. We kept adjusting the recipes we would learn from class to not use oil and they all ended up tasting like cardboard. In desperation we kept looking and happened to stumble across Lindsay's cook books. Eureka! For us it was like we struck gold as none of Lindsay's recipes contain meat, dairy or oil.The recipes are pretty easy to do and contain pretty normal ingredients. I thought we were doomed to a life of salad and raw veggies. With Lindsay's cook books we were able to have normal great tasting foods. Pancakes, muffins, meatball subs, burgers, fries, pizza, lasagna, spaghetti-ohs, chocolate chip cookies, chocolate cake, and brownies and yes great salads and veggie dishes. CAUTION: If you are new to cooking with plants, it can be challenging getting started. There was an adjustment period where we learned how to use rice, beans and veggies in great tasting meals. I must admit it was lot of hard work at first transitioning to no meat, no dairy and no oil, but well worth it.For us the cost of her books has been well worth it. The thing I like most about "Happy Herbivore Holidays & Gatherings: Easy Plant-Based Recipes for Your Healthiest Celebrations and Special Occasions" is she shows you how to do holidays and special occasions. If you are new to this way of cooking like we are, it takes all the stress and guesswork out of preparing for a holiday or special event. Yes, I agree that there are repeat recipes from her other books. If you do have her other books the appendix is great as it references recipes from the other books for special occasions. One thing I do is use the "Full Index" at the back of the book to search for a specific recipe or food category. I was looking for homemade ketchup and found on the same page (79) a recipe for a plant-based healthy version of McDonald's famous special sauce. By looking for a recipe in the "Full Index" you are able to go to the page in the book and see it in context to an occasion. By seeing the recipe in context to the occasion you are able to get other ideas and see other options.Lindsay's books have been great for us as we embarked on this food journey. We are able to have great tasting food without any of the meat, dairy or oil. And now we know how to create a great meal for any holiday or special event.
Another winner by Lindsay. I have all of her cookbooks and don't mind the repeats because of how this book is laid out by events. Lots of new recipes that I haven't seen. I love the book and the concept as socializing, since we've become vegan, has been challenging. Now I know right where to go when I need to bring a dish or having people over! And Thanksgiving already figured out for us. What a treat! The font is a little small for my "older" eyes, but I'm thrilled to have this cookbook! I think it's great. I'm buying several for gifts and Christmas gifts!
