In this full-color photo-essay, she uses individual experiences of rescue and survival to bring each drama close, basing many accounts on phone interviews with those who were there. The science of what happened to cause each disaster is part of the excitement, as are the techniques used in rescues, including mini-robots, a Thermal Imaging System camera, and desalination pumps. In the aftermath of Katrina, a nurse saved a teen by using an artificial heart-assist machine; in Oak Park, California, a firefighter rescued a baby from a burning house. Sometimes the focus is just too narrow (the photos^B of the tsunami rescue, for example, show mainly Western tourists and little of the effects on local people), but Markle does provide an extensive bibliography of books, newspaper articles, and Web sites for readers who want more information. Our grandson was 3 or 4 when we first checked this book out of the library. We adults were a bit taken aback by the grimness of such stories as that of the frozen baby and the sailor trapped beneath his boat. But our grandson took it all in stride. When a mining accident was in the news again recently, he told me he wanted this book again, so I bought it for him. The story of the nine trapped miners who were rescued in about five days is dramatic and hopeful. You can select which parts of each story you read, skipping the more technical explanations with your 3-year-old. Now that Jack is 5, we read it all. The book also includes 9-11, but focuses on the rescue robots. I found it a good way to introduce that horrible subject to Jack. In general, the emphasis is on rescue and medical aid to the victims, so it isn't disturbing, despite the terrible situations.Jack and I have always favored the nonfiction section of our library. Fights the tendency to underestimate what children can learn and understand.
