The Revealed Rome Handbook by Amanda Ruggeri isn't your typical guidebook to Rome. It focuses more on etiquette during your travels. There is some really golden information here, like which scams to look out for (and how to avoid them), how to properly order coffee (and when!), how to spot good gelato, how to get the most bang for your buck with general travel around the city and how to skip the long lines when visiting major attractions, etc.Honestly, worth every penny.She does have a list of her favorite churches, buildings, monuments and general areas to visit, and explains why (some of which are off the beaten path) which I really appreciated (and she also breaks down how much time you may need to visit certain areas, and the order you can go in that is most efficient). My one gripe (if you can even call it that) with this book is that it could use some photos or maps, and by adding those two things it could really propel this book into another level all its own. But honestly, it doesn't NEED them, it would just be nice!Buy it. Buy it. Buy it. Especially if this is your first time traveling to Rome!
Such a great find! Love the hidden treasures that she recommends and the style of writing. Also really appreciated the way the book is organized in “bucketsâ€. We went and explored the Monti area today, a part of Rome we wouldn’t have even known about before the book. Also great tips about tons of practices (including tipping). Finally - I accidentally purchased the pdf and emailed her that I had done so (only wanted the kindle version). Within minutes she had responded and refunded me the money. Fantastic book and great customer service.
Mine, not the author's. Not many people would read this book thoroughly shortly after a trip to Rome! But we do plan on going back (for a fifth time), and we spend several months a year in Italy. There is a lot in this book that is boring, repetitive and a bit elementary for a seasoned traveler. Still, Ms Ruggieri is passionate and knowledgeable about the city, and her views on non touristy restaurants, wine bars and less well known museums, churches and shops are useful for someone whose interest goes beyond the more widely known attractions.There are plenty of conventional guide books out there, and she rightly understands that another one isn't needed. The book title is also a soft sell marketing tool for her website, Facebook page and consulting services, which I have not yet visited. Rome is one of those great cities which you can savor and experience on many levels. There is information here that would be useful to reader/travelers of various levels of sophistication.
We travel extensively & always download a few travel books onto our devices. Ruggeri's book is one of the most useful we have encountered in visiting Rome. We have been to Rome twice. The second time we used Ruggeri's book and it really made all of the difference. We were only going to be in Rome for about 6 full days & we wanted to maximize our time. We used almost every page of this book--from picking a guide company for the Coliseum [this book told us using a guided tour was essential to navigating the Coliseum b/c it allowed access to the spaces under the Coliseum] to our restaurant choices at night. The book is short & so helpful to really enjoying the city. HIGHLY recommend it you are going to Rome & want to see it authentically.
I bought and read this before traveling to Rome (where I am now) for a short vacation. All of it was REALLY helpful and was accurate based on my current experience here- especially the info on how to skip the lines, what tours to book (we went with Walks of Ital for our tours), the norms of when and how to ask for your check, when/where/how to order espresso, plus food, shopping and transpiration recommendations. The only thing better would be a personal consultation with the author and now that I've fallen in love with Rome and now what I really want to see next time, I think I would seek out her consultation for a more in depth experience of Rome.
Loved reading this book! It's witty and also useful. It's written very crisply. And it isn't like the usual travel-guide, for these reasons. The author's experience, as an American living in Rome, feels authentic. Even if you've visited Rome/Italy before, this book can be a good refresher. Its lists of what may be described as 'secondary' places to see, and for shopping so as to give local producers business, are excellent. Its tips on restaurants - authentic Roman dishes, and billing (including the 'pre-conti' concept) - are useful. It cautions the visitor about pickpockets, while putting Rome's crime rate in Western-world perspective, so the visitor needn't get paranoid. Amanda also offers help in planning trips to Rome.Would appeal especially to those who appreciate a short read, and to those who are looking for something outside the usual travel-guide format. It does capture the spirit of Rome - from a visitor's perspective - better than most books/guides on that city.
Great book with helpful tips on our visit to Rome! We tried a few restaurants suggested and we were not disappointed! We also booked tours with Walks of Italy as mentioned in the book and we were not disappointed at all.
This is the best of (3) guides that I purchased for a Rome trip. This guide seems to concentrate on the issues and locations that are of particular interest to me. I think that the authors thinking is closer to the average traveler's concerns and this translates to a more relevant book. The Kindle version will definitely be with me in Rome. JW
